Widest filetread? (tubie and clincher)

Curious...

A good wide 700c tire for hardpack CX.

I have a 2010 Scott Comp. I'm trying Pasela 35's in it right now for grins. But they only caliper to 32mm. It looks like 42mm wide would fit but only 40mm tall.

Only UCI racers have to worry about 33mm, right? The rest of us can mess around going for a smoother, faster tire for lumpy hardpack.

Any good 40mm filetread type tire out there?

Probably some Gravel tires are in this category and might be awesome for hardpack amateur CX.

I have some NOS Pasela 35's (and a stray NOS 37, not sure what it measures).

UPDATE: I just googled a bit and found the Conti Speed Ride 42mm. Saw mention in Gravel Grinding review as well. It's 420g. (Grifo 350g.) I wonder if it's supple or if it has thick/belted tread. I want supple, thin tread.

Compass gets good reviews for its line of wide fast thin-skin tires. Big fat supple light fast. They have 38 and 44. But only slight-tread. They say that's great for gravel but hardpack is a different creature.

Others: Clement MSO 40, Schwalbe CX Comp 38.

Clement MSOs are file treadish and come in 40s, a bit more traction than a pure file tread

And to answer another question, yes, only need to worry about tire width with UCI races.

I think it depends on the courses you plan to ride and how aggressive you hope to be.

Can't say enough good things about my Compass Bon Jons in 35, but they were definitely not enough traction for CX. The knobbier Steilacoom's in a 38 could be worth a try.

I've had good experience with Clement though as well and currently race on the MXP's. So I imagine the MSO's are another good option.

Schwalbe has a bunch of gravel tires in the 35-40 range that might work.
G-One Bite, G-One Allround, Hurricane, CX-Comp, Sammy Slick, etc.

I have a set of Sammy Slick clinchers, I think they're 38s? they came with my bike and make for good winter commuting tires, but I wouldn't try to race CX on them. They roll fast on hardpack and gravel, but lose traction on hills and grass pretty easily.
