Dents in the top tube
Looking at a bike with dents in the stoker's top tube. With the added weight, higher speeds and twisting forces on the frame is there any risk to it?
I believe the frame is chrome-moly. In the pics, the dents look like the size nickel, maybe an 1/8" deep. The frame is one of the older style with a diagonal third bar.
Thanks,
Andrew

I don't worry about small dents. I bought an older Santana Arriva with three small TT dents. I rolled them out. That took out all the high spots and made them shallower. Then the powder coated filled the remaining depressions with JB Weld and sanded everything flush. Can't tell they were ever there.

How do you "roll out" a dent in a tube? Both my steel tandem and triplet have a small dent here and there that I'd like to fix if possible, only for cosmetic reasons. I may get the tandem repainted so it would be a good time to fix any issues.

There's lots of good info on-line. I made my frame blocks with some old growth 2x4 pine left over from remodeling. I used a forstner bit to drill the hole.

Here's a great video, my dents were much smaller:

The tubes that I have dents in are in S&S frames, and thankfully I can remove just that tube (top tube), which will make things much easier. I've also thought about checking with a auto "paintless dent repair" provider to see if they could push the dent out from the INSIDE using their special tools.
