It is the amount of surface area that they are trying to increase without sacrificing weight. A larger surface area help dissipate more heat. Hence the holes in rotors, waves, ridges, slots etc. Like the heat sinks in electronic parts have all those fins.

This is basically it. It can and has happened, albeit uncommon as far as I know. Personally, I've seen more burns from rotors than cuts.

Nope,

but you can cut yourself on a rotor. I've done that just changing a tire.

The rotors can get a wire edge from wear on the pads. easy enough to knock off with a stone or some sandpaper once every 5,000 miles or so.

I doubt any pros rotors ever get more than a few hundred miles on them.

Protective covers for discs?

Give me a break.

The large chainring is far more damaging to flesh, far more exposed, and is a common cause of injury.

I am curious if anyone suggesting using disc covers is also suggesting using the same for chainrings. These things already exist in the form of so called “bash rings” (common on mtbs).

Some bash rings are very light, but if you simply incorporated them into the chainring itself, it would add very little wieght, and virtually elimate injuries from the chain ring teeth.

Does anyone suggest mandating bash rings?
