40 Years Ago: January 1980 in Bicycling magazine

What? 40 Years Ago?
Yeah, it dawned on me sometime ago that I'll never cover the C&V period posting 50-year old stuff once a month, so I decided to up my game.
I'm probably going to add 30 Years Ago to the monthly mix too.

As usual, let me know if you'd like to see something else listed in the ToC and I'll do my best to send you a pdf.
Just send me a PM that includes your email address.

...thanks for this effort. That picture of Killy on the Schwinn exercise bike is Gold ! Also, the foot anatomy and solutions article is pretty good.
I did not remember how much a Klein frame cost back then. They show up here on the used marketplace all the time.

You're welcome. I don't tend to include medical articles from so long ago because it's possible the profession has advanced so far since then that the information is obsolete at best, or harmful at worst.
However, I thought the illustrations were well done and timeless, so I thought it would be fine. Glad you liked it.

The Jan/Feb 1980 issue is one of the few that I managed to hold on to over the decades! Nice to know that I'm not the only packrat in the group.

Lots of good stuff in this edition. Stuff like a photo of some junior racer named LeMond....

also an article about RAGBRAI, which I enjoy. I rode the 1980 RAGBRAI, so it was fun to see this write-up a handful of months prior.

but the best article might be Frank Berto's analysis of the performance of a wide number of rear derailleurs!! Possibly Mr. Berto's best known article published in Bicycling??

that's Jan Johnson (IIRC), wife of Peter Johnson. Peter is a well known framebuilder and gave a seminar at the 2016 Classic Rendezvous gathering. Jan was there too, and she is indeed a tall woman.
I believe there was some discussion on the CR list that she was used in the advertisement partly to make the frame tubes look a bit smaller.

For purely selfish reasons of curiosity I'd enjoy reading the article on page 36 titled;

"One the Edge of America - Desert and Gulf ~ A Veteran Cyclist Meets a Legendary Lady, a Determined Reverend and a Cyclist Who Pedals for His Beer"

I just have to know what the Reverend was so Determined to accomplish!

I should note that John Rakowski did a series of touring articles in Bicycling in that era.

Reading these articles, and the advertising took me back to 16 year old me, and riding lots of miles on the old Traveler, and enjoying the scenery around me and a more carefree way of life outside broadcast work. A nice pleasant read, and enjoyed greatly.

Thank you steelbikeguy ! As it turns out "the Reverend" was one of "those" types of clergy. Hell-bent on proselytizing instead of being "determined" to welcome the stranger.

yeah.... it's just human nature, I guess. We see it in the bike world too, where a person discovers something that works well for them and decides that it should work well for everyone.
I still have to restrain myself from telling people that they are committing a grave sin by putting modern drivetrains on vintage frames.

Thanks for the thread. 1980 was about the time I got back into cycling thanks to my three-year-old son who loved to ride his "ET" bike. He would ride along bike paths while I crisscrossed; eventually we got into MTB. Fortunately we still ride together.

Andy_K , take note. I guess a lot of us are going to burn in hell.
