Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Unexpected windfall + New goal + Schwagaholism = New project. :)

Always a dangerous combination.

So over the past few weeks I've been contemplating doing some Tri's and duathlons, along with some local TT's. My real goal is to finish my first Tri sometime next spring. We'll see if I can learn to swim. As I was whining about how fun it would be to actually build a TT/Tri bike, I was reminded of a fairly large sum of money I had coming my way. Convenient.

So I think I've decided on a foundation for this little project... We'll see what comes of it.

That is the biggest picture I have ever seen.

Edit: Okay, nevermind. Fixed. Cool frame and good luck with your goal.

Doesn't that mean your going to have to run? If I recall, you were moaning like a little baby last time your PFT came around :-)

I was! Since then I've actually started doing it regularly, enjoy it, and am running a half-marathon in October. Now I just have to figure out how to swim with some semblance of efficiency...

Good on ya! I don't hate running as much as I hate the fact that it takes away from time on the bike. Half marathon, no-thanks. Duathlon OK.

Buy the Total Immersion book and Video. Swimming is all about technique. Better yet get a swim coach and work out with a Masters swim team.

Given that I nearly drowned in my first Tri, I can tell you lots of what not to do on the swim.

DrPete -- I, too, have been contemplating a tri next spring (May to be exact). Thankfully, the one I am targetting only has a 300M swim. No Cervelo in my future, however.

Good luck in your preparation.

Hehe... is the story behind that funny or traumatic? Or both?

The Army post I live right down the road from has a pool, and they actually do offer lessons, etc. so I'll be looking into that. I figure winter is a great time to get into swimming shape.

Thanks for the tip on Total Immersion--looks like a good thing.

Just sprints for now--Don't really have the time to train for long events, so I'm keeping the goals realistic. Really i'm just enduring the swimming and running so I can do more TT's.

The Prince was just to drool over.

Just a sprint triathlon. I'd actually trained for the swim a bit, but no training in open water. All the technique I'd practiced went straight out the window. I was floundering, swimming z's, and totally exhausting myself. My 13 year old daughter (who started 5 minutes back) passed me before we even hit the halfway turn. I seriously debated putting my hand up and jumping in one of the kayaks. My fear of humiliation, however, exceeded my fear of drowning, and I finished the swim, one person short of DFL.

Rode a good bike split, after recovering from the swim, and a decent run, considering my gravity challenged status. Ended up 3rd in my Age group.

Congrats. I think I'll be in the same boat-- or at least longing for one.

I think that is a very sane<cough cough> choice. I am still working on the swimming and I think I am getting somewhere. I need to be swimming 16 laps of which I can do 8 if I hold on to the friggin wall for 2 mins after each 1/2 lap .

My goal of a sprint by the end of this year might be of question .

Sweet selection. I can't swim for beans either. I hope I will be able to run again after tearing my meniscus over the winter. I won't try till spring. Fingers crossed.

Your from Fort Worth, 300 M swim and in May. Must be Benbrook sprint tri. I did it two years ago a lot of fun. It always lands the same weekend as the MS 150 so I haven't done it again. It was a lot of fun good luck.

Yeah, the sprint tri in October around here has an 800m swim. I'll be holding off till the spring.

Sounds like a great goal. Good luck with that.

My doctor is a cyclist, but he says he sticks to swimming during the winter months-breaks the monotony-and he likes the cross training. Something to consider.

The P2C will be my reward if I can ever get to 250w for an hour. The full bike is such a relative bargain that it's hard to match it by building it up from a frame alone unless you have parts sitting around.

I'd get P2C but change the FSA crank to DA, and I'd go with R-bends instead of the stock bars. The stock wheels I'd chuck but maybe upgrade to disc plus 808 (IIRC you already have 404s).

I'll be using my military discount at competitive cyclist and doing it up with a Force group... unless I change my mind.

I consider myself a Specialized guy, but I have a sort of cheater-thing for Cervelos.
I was watching the TdF, and they did that segment on Cervelo frames and how aero and techno they were, and I totally bought in. Must own one, one day.
BTW, I was curious as to how long your military commitment is, in exchange for the education?
Good luck with the Tri.

The Cervelo is killer but for a fraction of the price pick up a swimming wetsuit. The buoyancy and slipstream you get from it will blow your mind if you are a crappy swimmer. I am so amazed by it everytime I swim I am tempted to do my bike leg in the suit
