What a mess! Judging by the license plates, this was somewhere in Europe?

Yup, makes a dish called "nopales," best made with tender new cactus "paddles."

Used to "harvest" my cactus for my neighbor all the time... but I just gently broke off the paddles.

Tastes sort of like green beans.

I doubt it... those grow pretty fast... but I suspect that isn't exactly "a tender new paddle" either. The thorns on the new ones are short and uh, "soft."

Certainly not the best choice.

My previous supervisor used to bring it in sometimes. Kinda bland. Need to have frijoles with it. He didn't mention harvesting the new ones. Like this?

Too new... wait till they green up... are usually brighter than the old ones.

This story was told to me by a guy who was there:

It was at a civilian dropzone (skydiving operation) at a small airport near Colorado Springs.
A female student jumper was making a solo (not tandem) jump.
She didn't quite reach the designated landing area, but landed across the road from it.
On landing, her feet touched, then she sat down (as opposed to the preferred stand-up landing).
Immediately, there was a piercing shriek as she jumped to her feet and everyone saw the cactus pad stuck to her butt.

(The designated landing area was marked with clusters of yellow-painted tires at each corner, and regularly patrolled for cactus removal.)

The cactus served in taquerias here has a weird dull twang to it. Not sure if it is naturally that way or if it is seasoned with horse urine.

You just can't get good horse urine here in Florida.

She's suffering from an old soccer injury. Time to wear lace up boots the rest of her life.
