Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You guys need to live a little.

The only thing more fun than a fixed gear is a fixed gear without a lockring so you can spin the cog off

Someday I'll buy a proper set of bolt on fixed gear wheels, but I'll just run brakes and don't try to skid for now.

Well and on the bright side, a tanked dollar helps exports and we can produce enough food domestically to not starve, as well as most all else. Much better than being Spain, Italy, or Portugal and having the same currency as your neighbors and a tanked economy.

I forget that some people's opinion of "light" is a lot different than mine

Got a link? I'm intrigued. I see most belt drive bikes made from steel since it's a bit easier to manage having to split the rear triangle in order to get the belt on and off.

I can't even remember what it was called, but I think that it's been gone for a several years, and I'm not even sure what it weighed in at. I would think (hope) that it would be easy to weight weenie even it it was a little porky when stock. Then again, I have no idea of what a Gates crankset weighs - I would imagine that they'd have to be heavier than your typical single. And yeah, it was one of the few carbon frames with a split at the CS/SS junction to accommodate the belt.

edit: ah - the District Carbon. Looks like 15.3lbs stock. Here's an article on it - https://road.cc/content/news/16204-j...istrict-carbon

Yeah that could be pretty easy to drop some weight from. Looks like aftermarket Gates chainrings come in 130bcd typically so most WW road cranks should work.

Probably SS only, unless you can manage to build a 130 OLD quick release fixed gear wheel. Chainline (beltline?) might be an issue though.

I have never ever posted or even visited the SS/FG forum. Dare I post there?
Is the Dawes steel? If so, I'd just squeeze some 126mm C&V freewheel action in there. For some folks, jamming 126 into a 120 results in wheel pulling out because of non-parallel track-ends, but I've never had the problem, cuz I'm old and weak. Olde Campy skewers have great holding power. This wheelset is only $50 on our local FB bike stuff marketplace:

Someone posted some Grand Funk? I missed it, I guess.

In other music news...

I was just reading about a gay dance club in NYC during the '70s and '80s called Crisco Disco. The DJ was perched upon a gigantic Crisco can. Wow!

I have a RCI front skid I'd like to install during the apocalypse. I put one on the Tundra but I can't get under the Tacoma to do it. Dumb question, but suggestions on a relatively inexpensive way to jack up the front to install it? I saw some floor jacks at Harbor Freight and Amazon. I doubt I'd use it very often. Thanks.

I do run both front and rear brakes. I do know that it's not be best idea, but given that most of the time I ride it on a super flat bike path with good sight lines I feel like it's not a huge deal.

Fixed gear MTB sounds so wild.

The bottoms of unpaved washes/creeks/canals seem to be the easiest places to practice distancing while riding in the city limits, so I'll be riding them a lot...

I've spent most of the afternoon trying to diagnose an inop light meter on a 1960s Minolta rangefinder.

No luck, but at least it's still in the same condition it was before I took it apart

I'd be doing gravel type rides, but with fatter tires and riser bars. I figure a cheep early aughts hardtail MTB, get one of those 6-bolt cog adapter dealios, so front brake only, and shred some two-track.

I've done some fixed gravel riding on slick 28s, and it was really fun, but fatter tires would be funnerer...

This video brought up vague memories of taking a bite out of a cattail back in the '70s. I wonder if I really ever did that. I definitely didn't cook it beforehand

There used to be drive up ramps (set of two) at Wally world for 30ish bucks. Hard thick rubber, one for each wheel to drive up on. Those might fit the bill.

found it. https://www.walmart.com/ip/RhinoGear...gaAm0XEALw_wcB

harbor freight should have also similar ramps for less if I remember search results correctly.
