No bicycle gifts at all. My mother is incapable of buying gifts that have anything to do with my hobbies/interests.

I must have been good, or maybe my GF is a great shopper. I got a $100 gift card for the lbs, an 18650 light/battery/charger set, a mirror and when I said I was going to have Lou at Foxwear make me a jacket she said that could be my birthday present. I really lucked out with her.

Never mind commuting gifts, I didn't get any gifts at all. Not even a chocolate bar. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Bought myself a Cannondale R3000 Si, planning to start commuting after new years!
Also bought some new tires, tape, and other items for it.

The in-laws gifted me a 105 cassette for xmas. I'm really happy because my current cassette seems like it's done for.

Major score for me. Gave my wife and MIL a list of ~50 things that would be nice to pick up, and they got me a new jersey, toe covers, balaclava and headbands. And, got permission to get a new commuting bike, so I picked up a Crossrip:
Apologies on the image quality, still trying to figure out how to get decent sized images up here...

The Crossrip is on the shortlist for my N+1, along with the Kona Jake. I'd like to hear some first impressions after you've had it out a bit...

Thanks for the advice... will have to try that with additional pictures.
Have had the Crossrip out on two rides so far, am planning on using it as a step up from my Trek 7.3FX as a daily commuter. Round trip is 30 miles of mixed paved roads / gravel rails-trails, so was looking for something that would handle both well. So far, been a nice improvement, and does exactly what I want it to do. I'm liking the disc brakes and the drop position, compared to the 7.3FX. Didn't check out any other CX bikes as Treks have been my go-to bikes. I like the local LBS which carries them as their major line -- good wrenchers there, and free tune-ups for life...

Does it feel any less stable than the hybrid on sketchy patches (ice, mud etc.)?

Not an X-mas gift, exactly, but I bought a set of these to replace my trusty old, broken Scott glasses. 4 sets of lenses for varying conditions. I tend to ride clear or light rose in all conditions (even bright sun), so I doubt I'll use the darker lenses.

My commute is very similar to how yours sounds, and I also had a 7.3 fx which I sold for a road bike in the spring. I then bought a cheap MTB which is my main commuter now, but I'd really like something with drops and disc brakes for the wet season (9 months a year).
