Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I don't, davis police are really strict about stop signs and lights.

i probably wouldn't do it anywhere in california actually, the state is hurting for money and hurting to write tickets.

I only do it on the longside of a 'T' intersection, after looking in all 4 directions for police.

I pass a few of these T intersections on my routes:

I also pass stop sign versions as well with the same deal.

I do not know if it is actually legal to cross the intersection on a red, but I do it all the time, mainly because the bike lane does not break, and I figure no one will hit me.

if police pull you over for it, just point at the bike lane... which is painted right through that intersection.
minus the cross walk.

See, that is always what I wondered...

I want to ask a PO every time I am out, but there is never any sitting around, since they are too preoccupied, as one of the largest weed dealers for the Beaverton area was caught a couple weeks back, haha.

I should ask A&S.

Well there are several lights in my neighbor hood that don't change and I've asked the city to fix them. They haven't fixed them so I run them when clear.

I run red lights and stop signs every single time if I have clear lines of sight and after I yield to any oncoming traffic. This can range from 5mph to over 20mph (very wide and perfect lines of sight at certain intersections). I'm actually safer running red lights than not.

Great video, I made it my AIM away message.

in nyc crossing on red is a way of life, for both peds and bikes. If you didn't do it, it would take you forever to get places.

What does that prove? There's also a dashed line between the two car lanes (minus the cross walk). Does that give the right to a right-lane driver to run the red?

That's a very good ad, but I still consider red lights basically a warning and not an order.

I think traffic lights are important to pay attention to, but I see no harm in running them so long as the crossing is safe. When I first showed up in this town (Portland, Maine), I stopped at red lights, but quickly realized I was the only one doing it, and that the cops are completely disinterested in bicycle traffic.

solid vs. dashed.

solid: do not cross over
dashed: ok to cross over

I don't know about your area, but here, near pedestrian activated crosswalks, 10m of solid white before the crosswalk so you don't make a lane change right in front of the crosswalk.

it's also solid white at sharp curves on a freeway here.

The issue isn't crossing the line, it's passing through the intersection. My point is that that both of the lines were the same outside and inside the intersection. So what makes the bike lane legal to go through the intersection, but not the car lane?

legally, nothing.

if a biker were turning left into the bike lane, you'd be in his way and he'd have to yield his right of way to avoid a collision. that's why it's wrong and illegal.

however, the damage is far worse with a car and the speed much greater, so it's easier to avoid that kind of accident. whether you fulfill your responsibility to the safety of others and the expense of your own time and energy is your choice, and the choice to be irresponsible is less costly on a bike.

it's still bad though. i stop and trackstand at every light. i still start before it fully changes though, so i'm usually a quarter across the intersection by the time i actually have a green. that's a bad habit i need to break.
