can you beat someone running full speed from a standstill?
so...we all know that you can do your busted up kevin bacon off the back dismount...coo coo...for real...
but, how fast/smooth can you get ON your bike? can you mount off of a full out sprint? not THAT hard to do on a freewheel bike....what about on your fixie? with clips and straps? clipless?
do you practice this? or other emergency skills? fred flinstoning it? ted shreding it? I mean, if you gotta do it, wouldn't it be nice to be a bit familiar?

I can do a janky cyclocross mount on my fixed running clipless, but it's from more of a trot than a sprint. And it's hardly smooth. however i used it last week when I had to cross a lane of fast bridge traffic after getting my bike down off a 10" curb. I suppose i should just learn to pop the curb.

I get running pretty quick alongside the bike and skip my leg over and land with both feet on the pedals (the underside of my clips.) I thought it was really cool till I saw myself do it on film...

I can do it from a reasonable clip, but like Zombie Carl said, I look like a jackass. It's only "smooth" in the sense that I don't "eat ****" or "die".
Even if I beat someone doing a running mount, I'm still the loser.

dude, what the **** is the OP talking about? i mean we all know ted shredding it, but anyone care to give a description of the kevin bacon / cyclocross thing? are you talking about when you're riding and you dismount by pushing off from the handlebars, shooting the seat out in front of you and landing behind the bike, holding the seat? if so i do that all the time and i could definitely see it coming in handy if you had to bail really quick and didn't want to get tangled up in the bike.
the thing about mounting the bike while running alongside it is definitely the fastest way to get on a bike. i would see the messengers do it all the time in a hurry. i don't care if it looks silly, it's fun..!

i've been wanting to do that a lot lately and i think it requires a hard hit on your taint because you can't support your weight on a pedal smoothly. if you could do it without waiting for the pedal to come up and then fully mount by the time the other pedal is all the way up it could be alright, but... well i'm too worried about hitting my nuts.

Read the description and watch the video I posted cc, it explains everything. You're not landing on your crotch, you're landing on the meaty part of your leg just under your ass and then sliding on to the saddle. It's easier than it sounds; the hard part is just to get smooth especially on a fixed.

Half of it is the luck of getting the pedals in the right position. I guess having a back brake would be helpful in that case, so you could stop the rear wheel in the right orientation. (Much like doing a no-footer on a freewheeled bike.) Otherwise, you spend some time waiting for the pedals to come around to where your feet are after the back wheel has shed its inertia and started again.

I start with my pedals at 12/6, and in the 3 steps it takes me to get up to speed my cranks come around to just the right place. Play with it for a few minutes and it's pretty easy to figure out.

Right, but when you dismount, the wheel is still spinning. That residual inertia carries the cranks around a bit more. Unless you're running a seriously tight drivetrain, that's going to be probably more than a half rotation. When you remount, there's no guarantee that your cranks are going to be 12/6 or 6/12.

Back in the day none of us cool kids had brakes on our BMX bikes. We would totally ted shred it all day long. I don't have brakes on my tall bike either. It was kind of nice when I dropped the chain on my fixed gear on a big ass hill and I instantly knew what to do.

Everyone thinks CX remounts on freewheeled bikes are easy. If ya think you got what it takes, sign up for an elite A, or B race and put your skills to the test.
And no, doing it on my FG isn't hard when you do it every weekend for months at race pace. In fact, it's rather easy.
