Nice to see so many hot VW's.
Rich, I have seen your silver Cabby so many times and the poor thing is always posted with both the before and after photos.
Every time I see that TR Gli posted earlier it makes me really want to drop the coin on some DZ1's and put my roof rack on already. Then I remember how tired I am of throwing money into a hole in the street.
Some old pics of my current comfortable hooptie. 04.5 Gli w/K04-01, Autotech 2.5 downpipe and exhaust, APR software, R goodies throughout, and the list goes one.
My old 16v carb setup that was going into my race rabbit.

Well, its not a Dub, but it is alot of fun and has been for the past ten years;
My Paddywagon and my Bottecchia beater, both fixed;
My best friend had a 'Rado G60 that I absolutely loved to drive. Sooooo fast. I could give him a run for his money if he'd stay out of the supercharger, after that, forget it. Myself, I'd loooove an MK1 Rabbit or Scirrocco or pickup or a Ghia or a bus. Love the old Dubs. Maybe when (if) the Integra dies. This is what I'm on most of the time now;

Back in the late 80's, I was really into Volkswagens. We did to old VW's what a lot of people here and on the C&V forum do to bikes. (btw, bikes are a lot cheaper).
Anyway, there were many, many similarities.
It was like a religion. If it wasn't air cooled, it just wasn't hip. Driving a Golf, Rabbit, or GTI was like riding a Trek Madone or Giant TCR. Sure, it was pretty and went fast, but it just didn't have soul.
There was controversy over what was considered iconoclastic. Some would take an old bug and do the equivalent to what people here do to bike frames. They would make the front window panels one piece, lower it, de-badge it and do all kinds of other custom stuff - even chopping and lowering the top. Other's insisted on keeping everything stock at least returnable to stock condition - in other words, don't mess with the body except to paint it. My personal cutoff was 1967. You could do whatever you wanted with later models, but anything before '67 was to be left as stock as possible. And anything with an oval window needed to be restored to factory original condition.
People would accessorize with certain retro parts that were deemed "cool" - Porsche hub caps were often put on old bugs in the same way track bars and negative rise stems are often put on old converted Miyatas.
We probably even had the VW equivilant to the tarck bike and aerospoke (both derided and defended in the same way) but I can't really remember what it was.
Finally, the demographic you would see at a VW gathering and what you see at an alleycat race were quite similar. Imagine an alleycat race where Sheldon Brown and numerous other older guys like him are in attendance and you sort of have it.
In fact, we sort of had our own Sheldon Brown in the form of John Muir, author of How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, a Repair Manual for the Compleat Idiot.

Well, I guess it would make sense that people with no sense in bikes would have no sense in cars as well.
Owned two VWs myself... didn't learn my lesson after the first [but it was a rally car]

Here's a pic of my 59 double door panel bus. OG paint and lowered a little. This is my baby.
This is my former Benotto that I just sold to fund a true track buildup. I learned a lot from this build and can't wait to apply it to my next whip.
