I always seem to forget that this ride is coming up and end up with something else scheduled -- this Friday-Sunday, it's a camping trip in Shenandoah National Park. And no, I'm not riding my bike there!

Tour du Port

Rita and I are planning on going. We're not pre-registered so we'll be paying the big bucks ($60 a head!) to participate. Thus, I'm going to reserve the right to wimp out if it's raining. We've ridden the CWC and Tom's Ride in the past three weekends all in the rain, so we're about full up with all of that (especially at that price!) It's a good opportunity to get a good tour of the city though and the funding goes to a cause worthwhile to cyclists so I'll pony up as long as we get decent weather. Planning on signing in right around 7:30 AM.

Yep. Bright and early for the start.
Will probably check out the Fells Point Festival afterward.
It's looking like the weather might even cooperate.

You could always ride to Baltimore on Saturday night and return to the park Sunday afternoon.

Looks like registration starts at 0700 and the course is open at 0730.

What route is everyone looking to do? Options are 12, 20, 41 and 51. I'm interested in the longer one because if I'm going to see the city, I want to see the whole thing. How about everyone else?

Oh you will see the city. Make sure you stay with the pack as you go through east Baltimore. Found myself solo going by the old American Brewery bldg, beautiful bldg but there's a reason they used it for a few WIRE shots.

I'll be at the ride with four or five others, no sure what distance but I expect to ride down there and back.

Hey Ellen!-You guys doing it with your little guy? Ask Jim if he wants to ride down there.

Hi Harry. We are thinking about riding down and doing the 19 mile loop or driving down and doing the 41 miler. Want to be back in time for the Ravens game. Do you have Jim's cell phone?

I don't. will e-mail him from the list. I assume that is a 1:00 game and I would like to see that too. Maybe I'll stop in Fells Point catch it at Duclaws or someplace.

C'mon Harry. Do you really think the east side is bad?

Here's the last 6 crime "tweets" from the B'More PD (https://twitter.com/BaltimorePolice) mapped--notice how east they are:

1 - SUSPICIOUS DEATH - 537 BENNINGHAUS RD. AN ADULT MALE BODY HAS BEEN RECOVERED FROM INSIDE MANHOLE
2 - POLICE INVOLVED SHOOTING - 2600 PIERPONT. NO OFFICERS REPORTED INJURED.
3 - INJURED OFFICER - During a traffic stop @ 1700 EDMONDSON AVE. Officer dragged by car.
4 - SHOOTING 2440 BRENTWOOD, ADULT MALE SHOT
5 - Shooting-Clifton Av/N.Monroe St-Adult male shot in the side
6 - Shooting-2142 Druid Hill Ave-Male shot in the shoulder

Ok, the 7th one is on the east side - Double Shooting, Lombard/ Haven Sts, adult male shot in back, female shot in wrist inside Eldorado's.

I don't get the Tweets but I told my 15 year old about them and now he checks the death count every day, gets a weird kick out of all the bizarre ways that people kill each other in Bmore. He particularly liked the sword incident, an intruder killed by sword, something like that.

I know there are some of us that feel certain neighborhoods aren't bad, just disenfranchised, true, but there are plenty of criminals out there that will take it when they can get it. Just reading the Towson Times crime log is enough to make you lock your doors.

Hey Harry, that one was closer to Towson than east B-more. It was in Oakenshaw/Guilford area. Across from Union Memorial Hosp.

Tour de Port: Anyone who is riding hope you had fun, excellent weather.

Today's ride:

Could not filter out stops--Bimactive chokes on the 147 mil ride file. Wish they would fix that.

NR-147 miles by yourself?

I did do the TDP, planned on riding my fixie down and joining a group I sometimes ride with. Last minute I decide to ask my son (11) if he wants to go, and surprises me by saying "yah", so we recruited his brother (5) as well to ride in the trailer. So I drove down with two bikes and the trailer, didn't feel safe riding home with that wide trailer and my son on his own bike, though he did demonstrate some pretty good bike handling skills. I decided we would do the short ride and allow him to use his own bike, more fun for him. He did 12 without complaint, think he enjoyed counting the miles we traveled, didn't complain and charged up some of the hills. Twas well run though we didn't feel like waiting in the Chipoltle line and I hadn't burned too many calories anyway. It was nice going slow without any real effort, often forgot that I was pulling that trailer.

Ellen-Good to see you- Jim and your boy-cool Garmin arm warmers. Where did you get them at that size?

Yes, sir. Nearly all of my >110 mile rides are by myself.

I'm hoping that will change, but so far the only one that seems to be up for it is GB.

Did the long route of the TdP. Not sure whether to call my ride the Tour du Flats or Tour du Headwinds. Coming down the hill at Patterson Park my back tire went "bang" and then flat. 3" screw through the tread and out the side wall. Had to put in a boot, but all I had was a thin business card (I wasn't going to use the $20 bill). At the North Point rest stop I replaced the card with something heavier (it was bulging a bit). Return from North Point was into a stiff breeze from the west. I was pretty worn out by the time I got back to Canton.
The difference between the 40 and 50 mile routes was extra loops near North Point. Up to Swan Point and down to Fort Howard.
Missed riding out to Fort McHenry. Might have done a solo ride out to it if I hadn't been so tired, or if the wind had stopped.
Even with the flat, I had fun. I got to watch the sunrise from Federal Hill before heading over to the ride start. Also spent some time at the Fells Point Fest.
