BB Conversion: Shimano Octalink to Hollowtech 2

I want to spec my old 8-spd C-dale tourer similar to a new Deore 3 x 9 bikepacker I recently acquired. I've read I can use 9 spd crankset/rings with the existing 8-speed chain & cassette.

The Cdale currently has Shimano Octalink V1 BB-5500 (68 BCI 1.37 x 24 -- 118.5 L to R). Can someone tell me which Hollowtech 2 size i need to swap in there.

Thanks in advance!

7/8/9 speed chainrings are compatible.

Hollowtech 2 for mountain has only 1 size. It only fits British thread 68 or 73mm. Included are three spacers to adjust for shell width and chainline.

Octalink is basically a splined cartridge-type bottom bracket that contains the bearings and spindle. Hollowtech II bottom brackets are external bearing only and the spindle is built into the drive side crank arm. Neither of the bottom brackets nor cranks are interchangeable.

michael101, This will be a pretty straightforward BB & crankset swap. You may need to adjust the FD position also.

I agree but I wasn't sure if the OP thought he could just change to an HTII bottom bracket and retain his current crank.

I initially had the same impression. :-)

I agree that it is straight forward. I'll add the detail that spacers are used between the cup and the frame to get the position of the crank right for the derailer. You many need to move crank inboard further for a mountain crank on a road bike so you have to use fewer spacers on the drive side than a "normal" installation.

Except that, with a 68mm shell without E type derailleur, the spacers must all be used on one side or the other for a MTB crank. I have swapped them side for side to correct chainline.

Yes, Hollowtech 2, removes the what length?, option, by fusing it . the crank spindle, now a tube, into the crank arm .
