Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Testament to helmets!

This is a cheap helmet but it saved me some serious issues if not death!! I was knocked out cold after hitting a pothole using front brake to much. Back brake was feeling iffty and was heading home after an attempt to fix it. Please lets us all be super careful and make sure your helmet is on properly.

All helmets, cheap or not, are regulated by the US govt and are meant to work as designed. Expensive helmets primarily give you better weight and airflow, not safety.

I cracked my somewhat expensive helmet during my only crash. I think I blacked out for a second. It worked! Shirt was torn, but my head was fine.

Glad you're ok. But you need to work on your braking technique. You didn't crash because of too much front brake. In fact in a panic stop almost all your braking comes from the front.

You crashed because you didn't redistribute your weight properly
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/over-the-bars.html

You need to push your weight back as you brake hard

How about being super careful about riding a safe bike, safely.

Teachable moment. Many people are afraid to use the front brake because they think they'll flip. OP appears to believe that's why he fell. When its actually not knowing how to use the front brake.

The Jobst Brant link is helpful in teaching how to do it right. I see no reason to apologize in taking an opportunity to pass on some knowledge.

I also am glad you are okay. The helmet saved my melon last year, I was an advocate to wear one and now I am almost fanatical. They are a great investment and who cares what they look like; better off with an ugly hat on the head than dead.

Yay for life and normal brain function.

By the way my helmet was a Bell helmet sold at a Costco.

Well I hope you saw a Dr. I put it off when I was crashed and knocked out in 2012 for 5 days. Still had swelling on the brain when I finally went. To this day I still have memory and attention issues that I'm told will be there the rest of my life. Get checked out anytime you get knocked out.

Yes you are correct but sometimes you just don't have time to shift your weight. In fact I dont even remember the pothole or braking but it had to be the combination of not seeing it and not reacting correctly.

Holla-loo-yuh someone who doesn't think I was just stuppid and even if I was... I think that the lesson learned taught me much better then the "Admonition Patrol". It was about helments and why I think I might of crashed. (Never even seen the pothole due to some other reasons not explained).

Yes,

From your post, you chose to ride without a rear brake, and used too much front brake. Both easily avoidable. The helmet did mitigate what might have been more serious consequences of your errors, but the errors themselves were avoidable, and that was my point.

Thanks. I did and all is well. In most cases there's not you can do but take extra care not to jolt you melon around for a could of weeks. If really server then the administer anti swelling drugs or operate to relieve pressure. (My son is a ER doc.)

That was all of our points, with a bit of 41 humor tossed in (at no extra charge!) but some people get a little defensive...

Why the hell so many beating on the OP over his one off/just needed at the moment braking technique??

I have no idea what this cycling obsession over front brake uber alles is. I learned the value of trail braking in Race Car/Motorcycle 101 over 50 years ago.

Armchair quarterbacking a crash you werent personally there for seems kind of inane as you dont know exactly what happened. Glad you're ok OP. Seeing stories like this make me glad I always ride with a helmet on..
