Sending a bike from EU to USA

Hi I'm looking online to send a bicycle from Europe to USA and the prices I get are around $700. Is that right? So expensive? I checked FedEx Ground service and another courier.
Surely there are way cheaper options?
thanks. 🙂

I can absolutely believe that. It just cost $100 to ship a bike I bought across country.

One thing you might investigate. If you're traveling to the US, you may be able to bring the bike as part of your travel luggage. It will likely still be fairly expensive, but maybe not as much as a shipping service.

Bikeflights.com often costs about 1/3 of fedex/ups. Always pay for the insurance option. The actual carriers won't insure stuff booked via Bikeflights.

Plenty of bikes here. 1-way or round trip? $700 can get you a decent road bike and you wouldn't have to ship it back home.

You might claim it's professional gear if you fly with it as baggage. How do the pro racers (or pro golfers or pro tennis players or pro skiers) get their bikes around the world when they aren't traveling with the team?

After my first and last flight with a bike since the TSA started, I won't take a bike on an airplane again. The goofs at TSA have to open any luggage that won't fit in the bomb sniffer machine (many airports) and do a swab inside to test for explosive residue. They clearly can't close up a box or case. No way they could ever close up a Trico Iron case again. Of course you aren't allowed to help them. I felt lucky to even get my bike back after my last flight. Box completely smashed. I had tied all the small parts in bags, and those bags in second bags tied to the frame. I was waiting at the baggage carousel and off in a corner a door opened, my bike came flying out in to lobby and the door slammed shut. Heave ho! Most airlines charge a huge oversize baggage fee, often $150 or more, sometimes for each leg of the trip. For a round trip, it's just cheaper to buy or rent a bike at your destination. Airlines are notorious for quoting different rates. One on the phone and some completely different rate at the terminal check in and neither will be what is on their websites.

Maybe FedEx considers a cargo ship to be ground transportation. Just a thought.

As mentioned above Bike Flights is an option and I think they have a competitor.

You don’t mention if you will be flying with your bike. If so, Lufthansa had a roll-on program for selected flight. And last I looked, which was a few tears ago, airlines softened their policies and costs for bicycles to a reasonable level.

so, if you can’t find anything cheaper than $700, fly with it and make it a vacation.
