The 2012 500 mile a month challenge
I’m going to try to ride 500 miles/month during 2012. Anyone else?
I've done 500 mile/month off-&-on for four years, and I've lost 50 pounds since 2007. Life can get in the way, but it's a realistic goal to strive for. The benifits of 100 to 150 miles a week of cycling are fantastic.
Anyone can report any result. Normally, participants will post accumulated miles once or twice as the month progresses, and will then provide a month end total.
It not necessary to meet the 500 mile goal either. If you’re tracking your accumulative totals and would like to build-up to 500 miles/month feel free to participate.
It’s all about fitness and motivation as a Clyde or Athena.

I'm in but with snow on the ground it's going to make it tough. I don't see me making 500 mi/month until March at best when the clocks go forward.

Yes, I'm also in the snow-belt and will ride <400 miles/month until March. It's OK to include indoor miles as far as that is concerned.
Some of our sun-belt C/E cyclists will bring in a 500 month during winter.

Sure, why not? I'll commit to this.
---------
Edited at end of month:
Jan 31 - total for end of month - 525 miles over 17 days
Far, far less than I had actually planned.

I desire to reach this goal and yet I am hesitant that non-cycling obligations will interfere. However, after doing a Metric Century yesterday I am already at 97 miles for the month.
I commit to come as close to 500 miles a month this year as possible barring any unforeseen hindrances. In order to achieve this, I hope to commute 3 days a week whenever possible. That will give me 120 miles a week. On the weeks that I can't/don't commute 3 days, then I will endeavor to make up the mileage on the weekend.

Where I have no doubt that I will be making some 500 mile months in warmer weather, I certainly wouldn't commit to such a lofty goal this early in my cycling hobby. I really look up to those of you with the confidence to announce such an intent for the entire year. Kudos!
And Daniel, you are a BEAST.

I don't think I'm going to be able to do it for January, February, or December.
But I will definitely be shooting for 500 in each of March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November.
Additionally I'd like to complete at least 1 century during each of those months.

I should have 300 miles in January completed. I'm planning on 35 to 55 miles tomorrow and 20 on Monday and/or Tuesday.

As of today:
542.9 miles
27,979 feet of elevation gain
36 hours and 28 minutes total ride time.
While I am hovering just above 200lbs it has been a great month on the bike. This month I have completed my first Century. This past Friday I achieved my best ever times commuting. On Friday morning I averaged 17.8mph on my 21 mile commute in to work and on Friday afternoon I averaged 17.2mph coming home.
I am looking forward to February and hope to commute at least 3 days a week or possibly more and meet the goal of 500 miles for February. I already have a Century planned for February 4th on the Silver Comet and a Metric planned on the 25th in Cochran, GA. The Metric will be my first group ride and I am excited about that as well.

I ended up at 241. The weather has been much better than normal, but the last two weekends saw fresh snow and frigid weather. I'm hoping for 300+ miles in February.

I like this. I am in. I only wish I saw this in the begining of January. Around NJ, we've had some fairly decent days where I could have added a few miles in for Jan. sadly, I have a big "0" for the month. I will make up for that when the weather gets warmer and by the end of the year, I want a 500 mile a month average. A nice easy to track goal. Ride On!!

I would like to join too
I am trying to cycle 20 mi everyday.
Although I quit smoking, bought me a bike and started cycling, like mid-february, (see the full story here) I did 217 miles in Feb
Today (1st day of March) I did my 21 miles
Lets see if I can do 500 in a month.
Good challenge

I'm in as I have just over 300 so far this month. I will try to get 500+ in each and every month, for as long as I can.

I didn’t even know about this challenge, but when I bought myself a “new” used bike at the beginning of the month, that was my goal. As of right now, I’m at 478.04. My ride home after work will put me at approximately 482.5. I have a 16 mile ride planned for tomorrow morning, and my ride into work will put me over the top. I’ve been away from biking for quite a few years, and am really enjoying my time back in the saddle. I’m on my bike between 5:30 and 6:00 just about every morning, and I ride anywhere between 15 and 25 miles. I plan on keeping at it until the New England weather forces me indoors. Hope everyone had fun, and remember to share the road. Let’s not give cycling a black eye.

0112 - 584.8
0212 - 337.49 (Hit by Dog, Concussion, Separated Shoulder)
0312 - 772.33
0412 - 748.46
0512 - 864.15
0612 - 913.47
0712 - 1054.82+the commute home tonight (21 miles).
Will be backing down slightly for the remainder of the year. I hate missing 500 miles in February but I am still trying to average 500 miles a month and stay under Clyde status.
