E-bike newbie looking for 20" front wheel 'package'
My 10 YO son and I are looking at a DIY project to work on together.
We want to add a motor to a drift trike that has a 20" wheel. This doesn't have to be long range as it's mostly for riding around the neighborhood/school yard. We don't need an aggressive top speed, as I'd like to keep it reasonable to kids but enough for 'bigger' kids (<200 lbs).
Thoughts
- I'd like to avoid lead acid batteries. I've had my share of electric assist toys and the eventual dead batteries that have to be disposed of.
- It's a plus if the ESC is programmable. Then I can control the throttle that way vs the overall voltage.
- To simplify, a package would be nice but I have no problem building/modding connectors for a separately purchased battery.
The Magic Pie's seem to be the popular ones but those can be pricey. I'd like to keep the costs minimal, in the event that he gets bored in a few months.
Something like a 20" front wheel kit, 36V to 48V, <= 1000W, with a battery included or suggested.
I've looked through the threads and there seem to be various suggestions on wheels or batteries but nothing in the size/power I was looking for.
Recommendations?
Much thanks in advance.

Any thoughts on something like this?

I honestly don't have a clue how fast 36V/350W would get us.

As a "practice" DIY project it's certainly good enough... You can always do a second project that would be "better" and your son gets older later.

Good choice with one caveat; individuals have had bad luck with BMS Battery; it's not feasible economically to return goods and sometimes they stop communicating and you're stuck.
201 rpm in a 20" wheel should be about 15 mph (calculate it).
Good luck --- fun project.
