Problem solved.
That's exactly what I do whenever I see offensive threads sticking out too. Burn em off! But, I never seen a tire with that many frayed threads before either. I got a feeling it was a bad batch from the factory.

New tire time, those are giving you fair warning. Listen to them please.

Here's what to do...

First, pull them
Second, find a bike you like on CL
Third, stash tires in some bushes near target CL location
Fourth, test ride
Fifth, VERY QUICKLY, change tires, don't inflate. Stash other tires as minimum return
Sixth, apply fake blood
Seventh, go back to seller, say the tires both gave, point to the sidewalls
Eighth, demand bike for free
Ninth, pick up stashed free tires

That's quite an elaborate heist just to get new tires. I just order mine on Amazon.

Wow, tires with hipster beards might just be the new trend in the PNW.

Do those tires have a puncture resisting belt under under the tread? If so, the belt may not have been properly centered during the layup process?

Maybe it's some kind of fungus from all the wetness in the PNW...

It seems more a design flaw as suggested earlier in the thread.

With all due respect, if the fibers are popping, the sidewalls are not in awesome shape. Dried out sidewalls have nothing to do with it. It's a matter of the fibers that are encased inside. The rubber and coating may indeed be in great condition, while at the same time the encased fibers have lost much of their strength.

50-60 some bucks for new tires or possibly thousands of dollars and a lot if painful recovery or worse, if they blow out on you on a ride...
This should be a very easy decision......

I've heard that naughty cyclists can grow hair on their tires, but in my case things got a little out of hand.

Given that the problem exists on the same side of both the front and back tyres, I'm wondering if this some sort of freak reaction to an environmental condition, such as light. Is this the side of the bicycle that is more exposed when it is stored?
