Help please

Hi all I could use some help with making a decision towards my road bike. I currently have a Raleigh Merit 1 road bike with Claris groupset, but I would like to upgrade.
I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth upgrading the components and fork on the Raleigh or would I be better off purchasing a whole new bike with the carbon frame.

If I purchase a new bike I’m looking at the Cinelli Superstar.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks much -

Anthony-

What is it that your current isn't doing for you that you'd like it to do?

Well for starters I really dislike the way Claris shifts- Other than that- nothing really, I’m just wanting something with more cycling mojo if you will.

Although I have not personally ridden a Merit 1, it appears to me to have been a fair amount of bike for its very modest price. That said, if you want to significantly upgrade the performance of the components, in my opinion you are probably looking at 105. Depending on how complete it is and what kinds of deals are then available, a complete 105 R7000 groupset could easily run you more than the Merit 1 did. The shifting and braking performance on the new 105 is fantastic in my opinion, but do you really want to put that kind of an investment and groupset on your Merit 1 frame?

I was in a similar situation about ten years ago with an excellent, older steel frame and ancient components. Ultimately, I just decided to keep that bike as it was and buy a whole new, second bike. That bike was a carbon fiber Orbea and for my purposes, it was outstanding. It was the right decision for me.

What's the budget? That's the million-dollar question. A new carbon fiber bike with 105 R7000 from a respected manufacturer will run you anywhere from around maybe $1750.00 on a great deal from maybe last year to sometimes a bit more than $3000 for one totally loaded from the current year and from one of the more expensive manufacturers You may find them for more or less, of course, but these are general parameters.

What I am saying is, decide what you want to spend. Then, you can develop a game plan that makes sense to accomplish your goals.

Thanks Bpcyclist -

Im happy to spend upward of $1500-2000 on a new bike if I go that direction.

I can get a new 105 groupset from Merlin Cycles for under 500 bucks for the new R7000 series.

Just trying to figure out what would be best.

I guess the main question is - Is the frame itself on the Raleigh Merit 1 worth upgrading?

Generally, i'd say no on the 'value' of hanging high-level parts on a budget frame. Typically, the frame on a 105-level bike will be finished to a higher standard, and the 'finishing bits' like the bars, BB, and headset will be a couple of steps nicer than what gets put on a Claris bike.

Upgrading the shifter, wheels and driveline on the Raleigh will definitely make a difference in the way it rides, but it won't have the 'mojo' of a bike like the Cinelli. That bike definitely has some style!

There is a Cinelli Superstar on sale now for 1599.00 with 105 but I do not think it is the latest 7000 105.

105-5800 would be a significant upgrade over Claris, in my opinion.

before you spend $1500 on a new bike have you considered a <$100 tune up to make sure the shifters are setup correctly
