Trim Suntour barcons with Nitto Moustache?

So it never even dawned on me when I snapped up the Jenson Nitto Moustache deal ($18!) that Suntour barcons are too large for the inner diameter of the bar. Sounds like the solution is to trim the wedge and body of the shifter. Aside from a metal lathe, which definitely do not have, does anyone have a good method for producing something uniform? Or a better fit idea? Thanks.

sounds like what you bought is not the Moustache handlebars, but what Nitto calls North Road bars, which are more or less reproductions of the bars you see on Raleigh three speeds.

Nitto Moustache bars will take barcons or inverse brake levers, and are normally set up with 23.5 road brake levers.

North Road bars will accept MTB-style shifters and brake levers only, except for perhaps mafac-style inverse levers.

An alternate solution (aside from machining) is to get the Albatross bars, which can take 22.2 brake levers and have an ID to accept barcons. They are more expensive and wider than the North Roads, however.

If jenson really advertised them as Moustache, you might want to consider getting your money back, as they misrepresented what they were selling.

The only thing I can think of is that they're mountain-sized rather than road. Sticker says "road", I didn't think to go further than that. Not really psyched about buying another set of bars, I have to say.

I take it all back; you're correct. They're the All-rounder. Damn.

pick up a set of dimension Moustache bars. They come in chrome and black. I use suntour bar end shifters with it.

That's interesting. The QBP catalog listing says they don't work with barends. I'm glad to hear that they do work, now I'm gettin' some!

I've seen barends on nearly every moustache bar I've seen on a bike, whether made by Nitto or other companies.

Have you considered reaming out the end of the bars?

A flex-hone in sizes used for shotguns should be easy to find and only requires a drill to operate it. You could alternately just use the correct sized drill bit, an expanding reamer or a Dremel.

Personally I'd rather risk destroying an $18 bar (though highly unlikely) than shifters that are tough to find. I wouldn't worry about losing strength either as I've yet to see a bar break out on the end. Just go easy on tightening the expanding plug.

Yeah, I saw that bar-drilling jig page a while ago. It's pretty sweet. If only I had some aluminum stock and a drill press lying around!

$.37 off the wall idea

Replace the 3 wedges w a short length of rubber hose. The outside diameter of the hose is just small enought to fit into the bars. When you tighten up on the cone thing, it will compress the hose, causing it to expand.

The bars sold by Jenson are not Nitto, and are quite different than the bars Nitto makes that are glorified by Grant from Rivendell.
