Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon bike finally asploded...

Well the inevitable finally happened. My carbon fork shattered. May have had something to do with a head-on collision with an e-bike but I'm sure a steel fork would have come out unscathed...
Got complacent on a blind corner I've gone around 800+ times in the last few years. It's rare to see another cyclist but this time was the perfect storm and no time to react. Broken fork and sore shin.

Ow. Sorry about that, and glad you're not hurt.

You know, you're lucky: usually when crabon asplodes, it bursts into flame, igniting the rest of the frame and any other crabon bikes in a 50-yard radius.

Time to get out the superglue

As far as steel forks, there are plenty of examples of bent steel forks, as well as bent steel frames. In fact, breaking the fork might have saved your frame from more expensive catastrophic damage (assuming it hasn't happened, and you just don't know the frame is also toast).

A bit misleading on the title. Anyway, carbon fiber is generally much stronger than comparable steal but it all depend on the angle of impact.

Right. Totally misleading title. The title should have been, "Is this fork repairable?" or "Is this toast?" or something like that. Maybe the mods can change it.

Seriously, I too am glad the OP is not hurt, having gone down hard myself Tuesday night.

Change a few letters on decal to read “Immolate and die.”

The fork, not the rider, of course.

ps glad you are ok!

When "broken fork" is accompanied by nothing more than "sore shin", you've done well.

I actually rode the bike a few hundred meters to a coffee shop. I knew the fork was toast but it held me up OK for a gentle, short ride. It was only when I got home and removed the wheel that I found the one side was not providing much support.

Based on videos I've seen testing carbon forks, I doubt a steel fork would have been perfect after that accident.

Oh, so the story gets even better.

Perhaps you can convert it to a "Lefty" Fork.

Why should we change it? It's what he wanted.

I didn't bonk my head just my shin. It's bruised and cut but not painful to walk on so I didn't break anything.

I just went around the corner too fast. It's a relatively narrow path so doesn't have designated lanes. We were on the same line and met at the apex. I was going fast enough I didn't have time to adjust my line or brake. I guess I went to the left a little but not enough as my right leg bore the brunt of the collision.

I have had to many near collisions with cyclists cutting blind corners at high speed. Sounds like you got off lucky and didn't get too badly injured though sucks about the bike, it can be replaced.

What happened to the eBike? Did its Li-Ion battery burst into an unquenchable blowtorch of sparks and flames?

If your fork looks like that, the eBike can't be unscathed, can it?

His front fender was mangled but the bike seemed ok. They’re signicantly beefier than a road bike, typically 40-50 lbs. I’m not sure what hit my fork.
