Northern Riders

I don't know how you do it. After a few bouts of snow and ice our roads are covered in gravel and dirt, and I'm tired of eating it on the way to the office.

Oh, I have fenders. It's mainly grit being thrown up by passing cars that's driving me crazy.

+1 on the balaclava or face mask. If its not too cold, maybe just a bandana would do the trick?

I'd have to severely restrict my intake of junk food if I were to stop riding in the winter and I hate exercising indoors so that doesn't leave me a lot of options.

Riding in NE I wore a Balaclava and a standard "cheapo" pair of saftey galsses that did the trick with the spray from cars. I wouldn't advise wearing a bandana, I tried it and they just seem to dampen too quickly and make it difficult to breathe at times.

Makes sense, thanks for the insight.

Try this one, it will protect your face, and let the cars know how you feel

IMHO a commuter just isn't a commuter without fenders.

i don't even wear my sunglasses in the winter (yes, I know I'm in Cleveland and we don't get sun anyhow, but i have clear replacement lenses, too) because of the lack of bugs. The fenders keep the dirt/salt off the bike, and I'm clean after my rides.

We have things called snow plows who push all that crap into the parking lane where only the bikes run on it not the cars!
Worse is spring thaw when all the cold patch from filling the potholes all winter is everywhere.

worst part for me is when there is a puddle of slush and a car or bus/truck sprays me.... it has been sub freezing for the last 3 weeks, so solid ice roads for 3 km of my commute and i have not fallen yet this year... by son did fall yesterday on the icey roads,.

the point is, just ride, be careful, go in a straight line on the icey bits, do not brake too hard and I find keeping the legs spinnings in an easy gear the best on those slick roads......
