Vanilla Cycles
I'm thinking of making a fixie this winter and would like to know what everyone thinks about Vanilla Cycles, I was thinking of getting custom frame made by them. But I also thought that this is alot for a first time fixed gear bike, I mean I've rode a single speed mtb for a few years now, so that part is okay, just need to figure out the whole no-coasting thing. Anyway, anyone's thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

You better get your name on the list now its long from what I hear! But I dont think you could make a better choice for a bicycle than a Vanilla that you will ride forever, granted that you dont move to Chicago and it gets stolen.

So, yeah, like, winter after next. My two bits: Sacha White is probably making the most aesthetically pleasing works of art in the USA. You will own something beautiful, unique and one-of-a-kind. My answer is obviously buy it!

That's kinda like that kid in high school that got the new $30K Car/Truck for his first car. You need to drive around a beater for the first year or so. I am kidding. Vanillas are the ish! They are definitely in my top 3. Those chrome lugs and rear stays kill me.

i read an interview with the guy who does vanilla and he came off as an arogant a$$hole... incredibly so...
however, the only picture of his bikes in the article was one bike, with vertical drops and a derailer hanger, with a track wheel on it... so who knows...

www.em-zine.com looks like it hasn't been updated in a while, and also doesn't seem to post the articles from the print zine...
it was in the bike issue, don't know when it came out... i might still have it lying around somewhere...

Vanillas are nice, no doubt, but as you say, you are still figuring out the no coasting thing. I would start by converting an old bike first. There's always the off chance that you'll prefer a geared bike or at least SS freewheeling.
Unless you are fabulously wealthy, in which case you should just go ahead and get the Vanilla and also get me one for giving such sensible advice.

If I could afford one and had the patience to wait a year they would be my first choice. But a gorgeous frame like this....for a winter bike! Man you must work for the government or something.

For a lot less money, less wait and probably just as nice a bike:

I like the Mercian too. However, Just from the photos I have seen I can't imagine they would be on the same level as a Vanilla. But I wouldn't mind finding out.
