Can't do higher res because I didn't have a high-res source file. Actually, the black and white is better - the colour version is muddy and I had to do a lot of colour correction. The PDF should be able to scale up, unfortunately, both the Langster and Josh's photo were 72 dpi which I upped to 150dpi. I didn't want the photo to get too jaggy.
The printer itself has some correction for lower res images. I should be able to work on the muddiness a little, too, as long as you don't put security on the PDF. I think printing low res color looks a little nicer and less bitmapped than printing low res B&W... I'd like to at least try it, and wouldn't print them if they looked like crap...

You guys have probably already tried this, but you could also upsample even higher and then do Gaussian blur (are yall using Photoshop?). I do this every so often with a decent amount of success. Of course, "success" depends on how large of a blur radius is needed to smooth out the jaggies, etc. vs. the amount of detail you're losing.

I can't do that without losing detail in his face.

The problem with the image is that it looks very much like a Polaroid (and I suspect it is), it's in low light shot with a flash that washes out his face. It's a pretty crap photo for this purpose, too much playing around with it and it's hard to distinguish features, etc.

Tristan, Angie - do you know if Rebecca or Josh's dad has a better photo?

I'll check with them to see if there's a better picture that we can scan. In the meantime, we'll work with what we've got.

you've done some fabulous work, Naz. Thanks for taking time out to help us out with the production. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you out.

still no sign since that bike spotting at borders over a week ago.
im sure our familes would be more than willing to add to a reward fund.
joshs dad will be in tomorrow.

Rebecca - do you know when Josh's friends saw him last? Specifically when he was in the same clothes or whatnot? I'm trying to piece together a chronology of events.

sunday july 31 - he left home late afternoon. i was told he had been to yojimbos.

monday august 1st - i left for school at 5am and his bike was at home, when i came home at 10:30am his bike was gone and so was he.

tuesday august 2nd- he spent the night at his friend lindsays in the goldcoast area.

wednesday august 3rd- jodie, lindsays sister, saw josh wearing the same clothes while he was out to eat somewhere. i imagine he was still around the goldcoast area but im not sure.

thursday august 4th- his bike was seen at the borders on north and clybourn.

thats all i got.

Was he close to these people? Did they maybe say where he was or know where he was going perhaps or did he mention any plans for the day to them?

Thanks for all the info.

Naz.

I'll hold off until later tonight to print them, then... I've only probably got enough cash to ship off one batch of flyers by the end of the week, unless there turns out to be more in my change jar than I think there is...

I thought of something else. When I saw his Langster it was locked up next to a geared, royal blue Independent Fabrications road bike. The reason I noticed is that I see this bike around Wicker Park all the time, especially in front of Earwax. The bike has black wheels with bladed spokes. If anyone knows the fella who rides the IF they might want to talk him up because he was likely in Borders at the same time as Josh. It's grasping but maybe worth a shot.

Thank freakin' god. Tristan and I were over at the roommate's earlier calling all kinds of people that he had in his address book.

Just got off the phone with Tristan - he's getting word.

Josh is apparently alive. One of the guys we called and left a message with called up.

More details to come....
