I just noticed the OP bike has a drop bar stem. Weird. Because it looks all original. If it was out in my garage, I'd be dribbling diesel fuel all over it. Getting it ready for a long ride. I would get a big chrome steel Wald basket for the front. Head for the grocery store.

It is original, the Suburban used the same forged steel stem as used on the Varsity with drop bars.

Drop bar stems on upright handlebar bikes are one of my pet peeves. I don't know if they mess up performance but, they just don't look right.

I got a curb find 'early '71 step through frame suburban , in decent shape after decades in a an open garage ( surface rust and dirrrrrty)
tires held air !
I cleaned tuned and lubed it and your help put it back in play. Thanks for helping me get it in the game and giving it a story
and the catalog was GREAT
