Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes

The trail of the Coeur d' Alenes looks so pretty. We would like to ride it next summer. If you are familiar with the area can you suggest a town that is somewhere in the middle where we can stay? Thanks

The annual Tater TOT ride on the Trail just finished. Pictures here: TaterTOT 2018 - Pix and Ride Reports - BentRider Online Forums

Planning for next year: TaterTOT 2019: Housing and Camping - BentRider Online Forums

The base for the ride was Kellog.

Thanks for your reply. Would Kellog be a decent place to stay?

Either Kellogg or Wallace has good accommodations though I prefer Wallace. Are you planning to do it from end to end? We’re in the middle of doing that now, started in Plummer riding to Wallace, overnight then back to Plummer.

We will be doint day trips - probably 50 miles a day. That's why we want to be somewhere in the middle. Thanks so much for your guidance.

Depends on where you start. There’s Plummer on the south end and Mullan on the north. The Trail is 73 miles from end to end. There’s only a few places that have accommodations; Plummer, Harrison, Kellogg/Wallace. If you start in Plummer, Wallace is 63 miles.

if you’d like, PM me and I can send you an official Trail map that I have.

Did Mullan to Wallace last year as part of a loop tour in MT and ID. That section isn't much to write home about, and it's up hill heading east. In Wallace itself the trail is under I-90 for a while. I'd skip that section and instead drive up to East Portal from Taft, MT and do a day ride on the (unpaved) Route of the Hiawatha Trail.

I camped in Wallace, but the Wallace Inn did look nice. Saw several cyclist leaving there in the morning. There is also a brewpub/restaurant next to the campground that looked nice. It's just north of the trail on 9 Mile Creek Rd.:

WELCOME ! - City Limits Brew Pub

The Trail is paved in its entirety, all rails-to-trails. The section from Wallace to Mullan is only about 8 miles. There are numerous trailheads to start from though most folks from out of the area start in either Plummer or Wallace. It’s an enjoyable ride, varied scenery mostly along the Coeur d Alene river, wildlife, sometime paralleling I-90 but a lot away from civilization and traffic. Lots of rest areas with tables and benches and good toilets along the way. You can stop in the village if Harrison and Cataldo for food, ice cream or rest.

The Trail is jointly administered and maintained by Idaho Parks and Recreation and the Tribe of the Coeur d’Alenes. It’s very well kept.

Love the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes! Personally, I always found Harrison to be a lovely little town. If you stop by, be sure to check out One Shot Charlies bar/pub! They have -excellent- Pizza! The trail just happens to go right through Harrison, too. And if you're in the Kingston area, I thought the Snake Pit was a lovely restaurant with pretty decent food of which the trail also passes by.

It's definitely a lovely ride! We even once met a Moose that decided to cross the trail. The locals said he often hangs around the area but has never caused any trouble. Pretty neat!

Place to stay in Harrison

We have decided to stay in Harrison since it has a bike shop. we are having difficulty finding a place to rent. If anyone knows of a place please let me know. No camping nor bed & breakfasts please. Thanks

Wow, these comments and pics are bringing back good memories. I lived in the Moscow/Pullman area 1984-96 and used to ride all over the place. Back then, I had to deal with huge logging trucks but they seemed nice and gave me plenty of room.
