Question for Ironman experts
My 89 Expert's Suntour GPX group was very noisy shifting when I first got it so I took the recommendation from a member here and switched the freewheel to a Sunrace R30 and the chain to a KMLC Z-72 and that made a world of difference .
I'm curious if there are any changes I can make to my 87 Expert's Shimano 105 group to get the same results?

I got rid of all the old friction shifter stuff on my Centurion. Bought some NOS Shimano 105 RD, FD &, brakes on ebay. Installed Microshift brifters
. Now it's simply awesome.

But man the original 105 is pretty Dang good as is.

Here's my 87 Expert. Only original parts are the headset and the seat post binder bolt.
The upgrade to modern components was 100% worth it. I love riding this thing.

Are you having an issues with it? I understand how you could with the GPX group but Not the original 205 group. Those components are solid and shift so very well. I've used the oem chain and a 9 brll speed chain and it all works well. Reportedly the KMC 9 speed works very well and is an improvement.
But man the original 105 is pretty Dang good as is.

The SunRace freewheels are compatible with both Suntour and Shimano. Try the same SunRace MFR30 13-25 or MFM30 13-28 with the same KMC Z72 chain. It'll work fine with Shimano. That's what I did with my Trekenstein 5900 with Shimano 600 group. Worked fine with Dura Ace downtube indexed shifters and MicroShift 7-speed brifters.

Properly set up and adjusted (and that group is extremely tolerant of adjustments being someone off) it should be as good as anything out there.
Depending on the age and mileage of the freewheel and chain, either or both may be in need of replacement.
If not that many miles, then lubrication of the chain.
Also use the RD cable adjuster to keep the chain an even distance between the next and previous cog.
