Colleges with Established Cycling Teams?
Howdy doody...
I'm getting my ducks in a row to start college in the fall of 07, and will be starting the application process this fall (SEP-NOV). One of my points of decision will be if the school or at least the surrounding city has an established cycling team. I'll be a CAT-3 by the start of the school year.
I did fine academically in high school, retook the SATs and recieved a good score, have excelled for the last 4 years in the Army, and am doing well in what limited course work I've been able to do while in the service - so academically, I should be able to get into most places...I wanna race bikes too though
Suggestions?

If you are looking in to west coast then it would be Berkleleys CalCycling. They won 5 WCCC championships in a row, and 3 Nationals. Riding up there is great. Ten minutes and you are in the hills.

Colorado State just won our conference (which includes CU, 2005 nats champs and FLC multiple time nat champs - Tom D. went there).
Then we got 7th at Nationals. This past fall we got 3rd at mountain bike nationals.

I'd like to say Montana State University, but the winters are a pain in the ass. You'd be better off with the two mentioned above, unless you like to ski in the offseason. We have 5 resorts within an hours drive of campus.

If you want to spend some $$ go to Lees-McRae college in North Carolina.
I was offered a scholarship there and would have still been paying almost $12,000 a semester in tuition.

FLC = Fort Lewis College
Chris Baldwin went to CSU, however.
Tyler Hamilton went to CU
The point is, the best collegiate cycling in the country is in the Rocky Mountain Conference.

For the east coast, Appalachian State University has a decent team. Only a few hours from Bragg, too. But just far enough from Fayettenam.

It seems most of the strong teams come from colorado, california or north carolina. I am going to colorado college next year, a great place with a tiny cycling team that races against all the giants like CU, CSU, FLC etc. I'm so pumped to be completly outclassed.

Another thing to consider is proximity to a Velodrome. More opportunities to diversify racing and training.

To be fair though, D2 no where near as competitive as the D1 teams. There are several D2 teams who moved up to D1 for that reason (Fort Lewis being one of them).

Dtrain - MIT is good, decent mens team, very good womens team, and decently supported (they've got a coach and they get a great deal of publicity for their wind tunnel) but there are better programs.
To be honest, prolly the best way to get a handle on the best cycling schools are to look at the team ominum winners for the past few nationals. You'll see a few trends.
In the northeast UVM and Dartmouth have the two big ass programs, with UNH and Penn State growing every season (I'd expect them to be on the same page soon). MIT, Harvard, BU, Tufts and Princeton have decent teams- Harvard has a ****eload of support (to be expected).

Colorado has a batch of college teams, Including the Colorado School of Mines. I mentioned Mines because; 1. I went there, and 2. They like vets. You just have to like being in a crowd of practical engineering types that have a very close relationship with the Coors Brewery 
. The level of cycling in Colorado can be quite intense. Check with the Olympic Training Center by the Velodrome in Colorado Springs for more info. I have not been in the area for years.

hope I'm not hijacking the thread, but I have some questions about college racing in CO and it seems some of y'all might know.
In local races, do the D1 and the D2 schools race agaisnt each other?
What cat. of public racing would you compare the B races to? how bout the A races?
