Very close to me, on a road I’ve ridden often, we were riding in Mission Viejo nearby that morning. Seems like open season on cyclists here recently. One member of our club was hit and is still hospitalized two weeks later, another was right hooked, avoided hitting the car but went over the bars and has a busted up shoulder.
Hoping they all fully recover soon.

RIP, he died this morning. Leaves a wife and 3 daughters.
Driver was a 25 yo, maybe a pill zombie at the time.
It was on a 6+ lane divided thoroughfare with long turn lanes. Not a fun place. There is a bike lane where there isn't a turn lane.

Another death in the same weekend, drugs or alcohol. I'm not riding the road as much anymore, I've switched to MTB.
Where he was hit on Alicia has a good bike lane, but it's like a 6 lane freeway the way people drive.

i have been riding for a very, very long time. I have seen an increase in the numbers of angry, entitled drivers.
Just last fall I was nearly ran off the road by an angry old man (I am 62 myself). I was riding on a wide-open country road with no traffic, except for the angry motorist. As he tried to run me off the road he launched into a curse-filled diatribe.
I was not able to get his ID, because the coward then sped off. This incident prompted me to buy an onboard camera. Might not save me, but law enforcement should be able use the video to track the offender.
so yes, the threat of angry motorists may not be so “real,” that is, until it happens to you.

Very saddened at this news. Worst of all, a DUI killed him. And a wife and 3 daughters as survivors. Hope 25 year old pillhead gets justice served.

In the last few years, the behavior of Colorado drivers has improved because the State Patrol has a web page for cyclist to report drivers, and CSP does talk to the drivers after a couple/three reports.

Here in NYC, where they can't seem to build more buildings fast enough, traffic has also increased dramatically over the last few years. Which has made motorists angrier and more dangerous since when they do see a spot of "open" road they often floor it before really looking to see what else might be in front of them. Of course many of the cyclists--the worst are the food delivery guys on electric bikes--are also behaving terribly.
Something has to give or change at some point, since they can't just keep adding more buildings and more people and expect the same infrastructure to support them all. Or maybe there is no plan--or that is the plan.
Anyway, terrible news, and I'm sorry if this is off topic.

Overcrowding and over development are possible explanations. I live and ride in a relatively uncrowded and drivers are still aggressive and unattentive. So maybe there is more than one reason.

Washington DC area has always had angry drivers. But in other areas of the nation, I noted an ever increasing level of anger starting in 1996 and sort of leveling off around 2008 at the much higher level.
In the last few years, the behavior of Colorado drivers has improved because the State Patrol has a web page for cyclist to report drivers, and CSP does talk to the drivers after a couple/three reports.

Motorists are the Joker in the deck for bicycle safety in most places.
