Strava personal records

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Strava personal records

Anyone know how Strava personal records are calculated? Did a new route today with a bunch of segment I never road before. Technically they should be personal records since it is my first time?

It technically is a new PR, but Strava doesn't give PR medals because you're not really beating a previous time.

Strava does give cups and crowns on segments that you've never done before.

Why can't you simply log into Strava and see for yourself as well perhaps answer other questions you may have?

I have never seen anything like that on strava before.

Dave, @HTupolev is 100% correct.

Ride them a second time and segments will then be PR's if you are faster.

I got a PR on Hulseytown by the way

Looks like there is an interesting segment on the route. It is the bottom of Vinson mtn road descent. There is a 10 way tie for the KOM at 3 seconds. I got 4 seconds on it.

We are a brotherhood, of sorts. So we come here seeking answers, from our brothers and sisters, for our common questions.

BTW, I had the same question and was not able to find the answer in Strava.

So go figure.

I think a few years ago Strava changed this so that your first time on a segment became a PR. Complaints were many, because users thought it a bit silly to have every segment be a PR when one was biking in a new area/route. Strava rolled back to the previous and current approach - achievements only for the second and after ride.

It spawned a thread on the Strava support board where one of the more interesting suggestions was a "first time" badge/achievement for a new (to you) segment so that you would see an indicator for at least that.

Remember when they wiped all the KOMs clean on January 1st one year? I looked pretty strong for a couple weeks until all the local strong guys got back on their bikes

I think there was a lot of kvetching about that, too. They haven't done it since.

I must not have been around for that one (or missed it, because I wasn't riding in the winter). When they have a "year's best" what's the need?

(Although personally I think the year's best should be the last 365 days on a rolling basis.)

If one is unable to find the answer in the Strava Q&A database or one doesn't want to search then just ask Strava support.

That was extremely irritating. Had a hollow crown instead of a solid crown.

So glad they did away with that awful idea. As winter progressed to spring and people started riding harder every single ride would be peppered with the dumb things. Absolutely no point to it.

Here is a specific direct answer from Strava regarding the issue and question raised by OP.

Bonsai171, good luck, and success on getting lots of PRs in the future while enjoying fun and safe rides.

That is just down right silly. for me the only meaningful PRs are those for long climbs, or long out and back routes. I like the ones for segments created for TTs also.

Guess you gotta look at it like you setting a baseline the first time.

After a ride, I saw I had a new PR! Yeah!

Oh, it was the local pedestrian bridge, it's usually busy, so cyclists go slow. PR -- 8 mph!! Woah! thanks, Strava!

~~~~
I like riding new routes, and do it quite often. I don't want to see a PR for all those new segments.
On a decent return ride segment from Dexter to Ann Arbor I was looking at Strava and found I was number, Er, not sure, but in the hundreds. After filtering for my weight, got down to under 100. Then filtered for my age.. Bingo, #1 .
