Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oakley Racing Jacket

I've been shopping for new cycling shades for a while (urge to blow money) and I've wanted to try the Racing Jackets, but it seems as if Oakley is finally putting the kibosh on them due to no longer being offered on their website. Is it just me or are the Racing Jackets more visually appealing then their entire line of cycling shades? I prefer a conservative full frame look and most of the glasses they offer are simply ugly and/or huge. Thoughts?

I bought some Double Edge frames.
I was impressed with the vertical field of view.
Then I checked the mirror and saw Will Smith in Hancock.
Decided that I don't usually ride near mirrors so I bought them.
I also got some Holbrooks; think your dad in Wayfarers.
Also great field of view so I got them in clears for night riding.
OH, my glasses are prescription.
I don't really care about how I look, I'm more concerned with how well I can see.
Do the frames create blindspots? How well do they block light from above? How about when I look behind me? How high do I have to hold up my head to see through the lenses when in the drops? etc.

If you prefer that look, that's fine, but there's a reason that their road cycling glasses are huge - it's for a more unobstructed field of view. Particularly with their newer lines, you can see this with their attention to the top of the frame - they're either extended (like the Radar EV) and/or they're frameless on top (like the Flight Jacket). This can often give riders a better view when you're low/aero, but you'll want to go to a store to try them on for yourself and see if it makes a difference for you.

For me, the extended view along the top is nice but not a deal-breaker - I almost always wear a cycling cap with brim which is going to obstruct a bit, anyway (and if I'm being honest, I've been wearing my Ray-Bans more often than my Oakleys [Radarlock], lately, mostly for aesthetic reasons, for the more casual look).

I have a pair of Racing Jackets and a pair of Radar EV Path prism glasses. From a functionality standpoint, the radar glasses are far superior because of the improved peripheral visibility of the half-frame design. As far as fashionable? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

I'll take the Radars any time.

Like most premium products, seems like a decision that's less about utility and more about emotion and how the sunglasses make you feel. IMO, we've had trends of giant frameless glasses before, then back to frames, and now...yeah. Marginal gains and a lot of marketing.

If we are just tossing out some ideas, that are nothing like Oakley Racing Jackets, I like these.

https://www.ekoi.com/en/configurateu...o-evo-9-3.html

Shipping is expensive to the US, but they are still fairly affordable(compared to Oakley)

I had to look these up. As is often the case, the aesthetics are... subjective. That said, holy guacamole is this pic totally 80s!

I have some Racing Jackets. The peripheral vision on them is not great. The only time I wear them is when I am at the velodrome and there are only a few riders
