stationary vs road posture-comfort
I was asked if the stationary recumbent shares the same general expectations when it comes to comfort during use. I honestly told them I'm not the one to ask for that opinion as I don't have familiarization with both, only just the one.
So that got me thinking the same question. Are the traditional recumbents with like shared characteristics [ie: pedaling separate from steering, slouch/posture angle relatively the same] going to yield the same comforts? If someone has a known "mechanics back" issue, are there recumbents to stay away from to avoid any flare ups?

Different bents have different ergonomics and seat styles and shapes, and not surprisingly some folks will greatly prefer one type over another. There is tremendous variety in the bent world, and this can be a barrier for some people. The best bet is to test ride as many different kinds as possible to figure out what one likes.

Biggest difference between stationary recumbent exercise machines and recumbent bikes/trikes is that the bikes/trikes actually move.
Like steamer said, lots of variety in the recumbent world. Generally, riding a 'bent bike or trike does not involve supporting most of your weight on a very small area - your sitbones - while supporting the rest of your weight on your hands/arms. Instead, the load is shared by a much larger area of butt/back, minimizing traditional cycling discomfort.

Most, nay, ALL of the stationary recumbent machines I've seen are more upright than any real recumbent. With typically crappy back rests. "Q" factor on them tends to be huge, too. So in my opinion, they're not as comfortable as the real thing.

My experience on recumbent machines I use at our YMCA in the winter is that they are kinda sorta approximately like riding a 'bent bike.
