FS: 1986 Specialized Allez SE $525

I bought this bike new to see if I would like road biking as much as I liked mountain biking. Well, long story short after about a hundred or so miles I parked it for 30 years. This bike uses a combination of Suntour Superbe Pro and Specialized components. Brakes are Dia Compe RGC 400. Always stored indoors and away from direct sunlight so no fading on the paint. It's completely original except for the bar tape and even that is like new. I only replaced it because I reversed left and right brake actuation. If I could go back I would have just left that alone. The only scratches I'm aware of is on the seat post as shown in the photo. Everything spins freely and even the original tires seem as good as new. The size is 56 cm. I made a sketch to show some additional dimensions of the frame. I'm asking $495 and would highly prefer local pickup to shipping, but wouldn't rule anything out. My location is Detroit Northern suburbs.

Cheers.

Ooof. That is a hot looking bike. I just built up an '89 Sirrus with a very similar (possibly same according to some sources) frame into a flat bar city bike and I love it. GLWS

What kind of tubing was used on the frameset??
And the wheels? Are they tubulars?

I'll double-check these things as soon as I can but I can tell you the tires use tubes and I'm almost sure the tubing it's called racing chromoly or something along those lines but nothing really exotic.

Thanks, I used to live in Huntington Woods, by Berkley. I would have stopped by to check out that bike, asap, if I was still living there.....

The tubing was proprietary to Specialized, God only knows what they actually used. I do know that it was nice, however. I have an '85 SE and my wife loves it.

The Jim Mertz Allez had the same tubes. I'd assume they're very good Tange. This was a very nice ride.

I asked the forum recently when I was looking at an Allez SE, and the wisdom imparted was that it was likely Tange Champion 2 or equivalent, and possibly built in a Miyata facility. The word was that the tubing was labelled in a non-specific way to allow Specialized to flexibly source tubing from different makers, but always high quality and light.

The tubing was produced to to very exacting specs from Merz, DiNucci, Neenan and a host of others from various sources. Make no mistake, it is excellent. Likely better than what they normally produced most of the time, Sinyard had no sense of humor about it or anything else and made darn sure he got exactly what these guys expertise and his money brought to the table.

To be honest if I were consider that it would be of a last resort. Last fall I had a guy who wanted to buy it and actually drove about 40 miles to look at it. He told me if the frame was just one or two centimeters different he would have bought it on the spot. I would kind of like the buyer to see it in person and be sure it's exactly what they want. If I did consider shipping I would need someone to help me understand the best way to do it.

The bike has a new home

Milkdudd's description of "Excellent Condition" was indeed spot on. I'm happy to have the bike and will take care of it as well as he did.
