Is this Trek 400 Elance bike worth it?

"sacramento.craigslist.org/bik/6967664558.html"

Thinking about buying this bike for $160. The seller said he has changed some of the parts up. Am I getting a good deal?

Trek must have made a million of those 400 series bikes BITD because there are still so many in use today. The seller doesn't mention gears anywhere but, it looks like a 7 speed set up. Or, it could be a 6 speed. 531 frame is nice. Nice parts. Rear rack. Looks like a nice clean bike. The only thing that concerns me is the size. It only looks suitable for a small rider. Good size for a woman or a junior. If the wheels are true & tires are good then $160 is reasonable. If you have your heart set on an old Trek 400 don't worry. Another one will probably come around before too long.

Agreed that the fork on that 400 looks bent.

What type of riding do you want to do and what's your budget? There's a couple of Trek 520's (drop bar, touring/comfort geometry, reasonably light weight) on the Sacremento CL - good all-around bikes that can take/have rack, fenders, etc. , but not race bikes.

One of them is a small frame - 1990's - Reynolds 501? - $300 - https://sacramento.craigslist.org/bi...965466753.html

One is a large - 1980's - Reynolds 531 - $275 - https://sacramento.craigslist.org/bi...968366503.html

As demonstrated by the seller of the Trek 400, some people will try to sell damaged goods. If you're not sure what you're looking at take it to a bike shop prior to purchase for an inspection - and/or post the listing here as you did.

Interesting.

I have a 1985 Trek 410 that is True Temper - nice ride - not sure I could really tell the difference between the various better-quality steels that were used to for bike tubing.
