Tektro CR720 cantis vs. Velo Orange MK3

Anyone have a semi-informed opinion on this crucial matter? VO has its version on sale, so they are roughly equal in cost. Either one will be an improvement over my Oryxes, one of which has basically seized up.

Thanks in advance,

Steve M.

Dunno anything about the VO brakes, but the CR720's are very nice...I have a set on my commuter.

I love my cr720s. Be advised though, their pads are absolute garbage.

I have a set of CR720s as well on my Ross as well. The best cantis I've used.

This seems to be true of all Tektro brakes. The brakes are good but the pads have to be replaced immediately. I'm also a fan of Kool Stops.

Tektro CR720 Cantilever Brake Front or Rear Satin Silver

$34 for a bike's worth of cr720.

Just sayin...

Had the VO Mk2 cantis and ditched them a while back for v-brakes. Had Tektro 720s on a different bike and kept them until I sold the bike on...

I keep reading that but I'm using the stock pads on my soma doublecross. Not the best pads I've used but far from the worst as well. I haven't felt the need to change them even after reading all the posts dissing the pads.

I have the Tektro 720s on two bikes, and Shimano CX50s on two bikes. Both are great brakes for money, but work better with KoolStop pads. The Tektros jut out more on the sides, if that's an issue.

I installed a set of Tektro R539 (long reach) calipers on my Surly Pacer and, while the calipers were fine, the pads were pretty bad compared to my experience with Kool Stops on other brakes. A replacement set of Kool Stops improved their performance noticeably.

I agree with you. I like Kool Stops a lot.

But I don't dislike the original pads on my Tektros, either the 720s that I run on a few of my bikes or the R539s that I use on my salsa casseroll. Your mileage obviously varies from mine.
