Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Extract data points from garmin into .xml?

I'd like to extract every data point from my 305 and put it in a spredsheet. I can't seem to figure out how to do this...is it possible?

I want to run some stuff through SPSS, because i'm bored and nerdy like that.

You can export your workouts from Garmin Training Center to a TCX file which is just an XML file. Open it up with excel and bingo bango.

Which by the way is a horrid implementation of XML.

I gave up trying to make sense of it (from my 705).

The TCX file format isn't horrible except for the way it stores power data. XML is general is a pain in the ass to work with, it's hard to store a lot of data without a ridiculous amount of overhead.

XML CAN be quite simple, though it will never be space efficient.

Garmin, however, has done some very ugly things in it's XML use.

Try editing a defined workout file directly and you'll see what I mean.

Why would anyone do such a thing? Well in my case because the 705 interface is painful to use, and the training center software crashed and won't sync because it doesn't understand power zones.

The TCX is at least fully defined, so you can write a quick DTD to extract out the salient parts. There's a lot of redundent data in the file though, so it is pretty ugly to look at raw.
