my newfound respect for my far-northern colleagues and peers...
sirs,
last week you may be aware that i made some comments as to the temperature and weather in my moderately temperate location in the great peoples' commonwealth of pennsylvania. as canadians, finns and various other forum members grumbled about their cold weather, i had a good laugh to myself.
i recant my whimsy at your misfortune. today when i got up to ride to class it was 16°f, with a wind chill of -2°. the winds gusted up to 40mph, and were sustained at 25mph. i ride up a steep hill for about two blocks in the beginning of commute that i usually power up as fast as i can. however, today i was already shivering and worn out by the time i got halfway up the hill! the wind was gusting so hard right into me. i'm used to this, but the cold wind just penetrates everything. then as i got the top, my nose turned into a faucet that let out a river of snot. as i bombed my next hill before i roll up to class, the winds froze the mucus layer on my upper lip.
anyway. i've ridden in this type of weather before. but never the cold! and i think the fact that we were having 60° days last week kinda led me to believe spring was on its way. now i just remembered march.

I have lake effect where I live (niagara region, right inbetween Lake Ontario and Lake Erie) so our temperatures are moderate. I feel shame for anyone that lives anywhere else in Canada though. Today was sunny, still cold, though.

But the weird and sad thing is, here in Scandinavia we are having probably the warmest winter in living memory! I mean, we should be having -10C solid with several -20 to -27 days in February. And instead, the snow is almost all melted away and all we get are effing rains (not pleasant at +2).
This is bad. As much as I hate frostbites (yeah, one winter I got a frostbite on the tip of my nose - idiot!), this weather is neither pleasant nor good for the environment. Much more likely to have ice (as temperature yoyos between - and + ) with a wet layer above, and the trees will begin to bloom way too early - which then a cold spell will destroy.
Oh, and BTW: 666pack, we forgive you.

I've had no problems riding in the cold, though. Put on a balaclava, grow a beard, and ted shred.

666 pack,
As long as one can realize their myopia, that is all another forum member can ask of you
I'm a few hours north of you up here in NYS and it was pretty cold today. But, that wasn't the worst part. What was truly awful was that after a few weeks of putting my nicer bicycles through the sand and salt on the roads I couldn't bring myself to subject them to that treatment. I rode my true beater bike (an old mountain bike with enormous studded tires and a bottom bracket that swings side to side like a metronome) and rolling along at around 8 mph and not being on one of the bikes I love was the worst part.
But, I'm doing it on purpose to push me to get my halfway decent winter bike built up.
And beware the black ice! A cold ride gets that much worse when you go down, rip some clothes, bloody some skin, and then have to start from a dead stop on a hill.

SW Missouri was 20's-30s today, it iced all morning, the power was out a few times. It was fun riding my mtb on the ice. The cold is nothing like Ohio was though.

I don't even know what the temp was here in St. Paul, but I was glad to have every square centimeter of my flesh covered up real nice. The wind was blistering and I showed up at the office with a string o' snot sticking to my scarf, but all my fingers remained attached and all was well.
The "you biked here!?!" look on everybody's face is totally worth it once I'm inside. Good stuff.

Squirrel
I get a kick out of all the southern people who chirp the warm temperatures while we're freezing with snot frozen to our chin. They have no memory at all! In 6 months we're going to hear endless complaining about how hot* it is and it's too miserable to ride!
But do we* make perky little comments about our perfect riding weather in August? Nooooooooo.

Also, we need to ride soon. I haven't been out in a couple days, too salty.
