Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where is the new RED?

I thought that the 2011 RED would show at this years tour.

Does this mean it will be the 2012 model year before we see an updated RED?

I have heard nothing from any of my channels but that doesn't necessarily mean much. If it were a 2011 we would have seen it last fall. if there is anything coming it will be 2012 and we would have most likely seen pictures of some final prototypes or production pieces at this year's tour odds are.

My $0.02 - SRAM has been REALLY busy. Not sure what they would do for Red at this point.

New Red, same as the old Red. Long in the tooth, for sure.

I'm sure SRAM understands that its lineup is getting mighty close to its "Sell By" date. Surely something is in the works. "Bold new graphics?" Anything? SRAM?

I read on their website that the yellow coloured RED is being released in september, but that's all I've seen from them.

Maybe they'll compromise and name it "Orange."

I wonder if they're having troubles digesting all the corporate acquisitions. That's usually a pretty tough process and they've been doing a lot of it.

Ah...it is, but keep in mind they have been doing it since day 1. They should have it down pat by now.

Honestly I think the they are just busier than anything right now. normally they'd have a pretty heavy marketing blitz for things that are coming up.

Keep in mind they have had a lot of stuff hit the market. In general Apex is finally making it to US distributors, and the SRAM stock Quarq is now making into distribution chains. Those are some pretty big moves - haven't seen Shimano add a line and put a power meter in their lineup this year....

Nothing but the new Force is almost identical to it except for zero loss on the rear for half the cost. Also Force has a BB30 crank option whereas Red does not and BB30 is increasing in popularity with bike manufacturers.

Recently while downtown, I tried sneaking into SRAM where they do R&D. Their security is tough, big time tough. I shook President Clinton's hand while in the Navy, but I couldn't even get to the secretary One of my clients is in the same location as SRAM, so I figured I would see if I could get a free groupo, didn't go as planned.

Too much incorrect, even for BF.

FD mechanism is somewhat finicky. Requires some patience to dial in cable tension just right in order to avoid chain rub.

Shifter travel can be improved (shortened) when changing from low to high gearing.

Did you get to see their space? It's pretty 'effing cool. Got a tour when the company I used to work for did a little work for them.

Ceramic pulleys, ceramic BB, Red also has a BB30 crank.

Incorrect.

The yellow colored RED that's on the tour now is currently a special edition. It was produced for all the winners of the previous tours that are currently running Sram Red on their bikes. I've spotted it on a few folks' bikes on the tour so far.

It's on previous TdF winners' bikes. SRAM apparently will be selling them this Fall as special edition (might be like the "red" Campy Record 10).

No I didn't unfortunately. The security guard was a bit bigger than I and was far more serious than any other person I have come across in his position. I accidentally went into a section at an undisclosed location in DC without the issues this guy gave me I will talk with someone from there and see if I can get a tour some day. I think Psimet may have already had that tour, so maybe he knows someone.

Rival and Force have ceramic BB options. Ceramic pulleys can be added to any other SRAM RD. I was wrong about the BB30 Red crank but Red has one exclusive thing compared to Force which is Zero Loss on the rear shifter. So how is my original statement that Force is almost identical to Red not true? Key work being almost.
