Two piece cranksets in 68mm BB?

Hi All,

I've built up nicer framesets with a BB86 and the 5800/6800 2 piece cranksets.

I've also built up cheaper framesets with the 68mm Englished threaded BB with 3 piece cranksets (i.e. Shimano's Octolink stuff).

Now I'm looking at Ti bikes which are nice but have the 68mm english threaded BB. What nice two piece cranksets do people recommend I use in that type of BB?

Maybe I'm imagining it, but the 2 piece cranksets seem so much nicer than the 3 piece I always seem to go faster using them.

All of the Shimano Hollotech II (external bearing) bottom brackets are available in English threaded format and will work with any of their Hollowtech II (two piece) cranks. The current most commonly available and lightest one is the BB-R60.

I wouldn't pick a crankset based on the bottom bracket type. I'd pick the crankset and change the BB to what is appropriate for that crankset. Unless your BB shell is an odd thread you should be able to find a match for your BB shell and desired crankset.

Standard (ISO is The British standard*, Now) threaded BB means you get the external bearing set that comes packaged with the crankset..

*1.370 x 24 tpi with a 68mm bb shell .

Road (and were talking about Shimano here) don't come/never came with a BB in the (retail)box ( MTB cranks which are 11 speed don't either, older 10 speed did, but you have to check the listing/description, as some OEM didn't)

I know nothing of Today's British packaging conventions, where you shop, online, in case it does not , then get the BB cartridge bearing assemblies
and the installation tool,

Probably a 1/2" drive torque wrench too, since the torque spec is pegging a 3/8" torque beam wrench..

Nothing to do with this, all to do with what comes out the Shimano factory in Singapore, Malaysia, China or Japan (or wherever), we all get the same cranks wherever we are located, be it in the EU or NA market, simply, they don't ship HT2 BB's with cranks anymore (& never did for road cranks)

That's correct but some UK retailers include the bottom bracket with a crank purchase. I bought a Shimano FC-5703 crank recently and a BB-R60 was included in the shipment. It was a nice extra.

Yes but no. A lot of the 30 mm cranks will not work in a BSA BB frame.

As already said, you should be able to find a 68mm BSA bottom bracket for most cranks you might be interested in so you have lots of choices. It's hard to beat the value of the Hollowtech II cranks and BB's. They're an easy install too.

You might be correct. I don't know. But the first 30 mm crank I googled came up with a BSA threaded external BB included. Vector M30-M Crankset

My main intent with the statement is that if you pick a bb first, then you severely limit your choice of cranksets. I'd think it obvious that you still have to check compatibility.

I don't follow. I'm interested in TI framesets and most of them have 68mm BB. How exactly would I "change the BB" for such a frameset?

Agreed that Shimano's product is outstanding. My first build was with the 5800 crankset. I was nervous as hell because it was a BB86 Press fit and there are oodles of threads on squeaking BBs etc. I installed it in 30 minutes and not a squeak in over two years!

By installing an English threaded bottom bracket suitable for use with the crank you choose. The poster didn't mean you would change the bottom bracket shell (which is part of the frame) but the bottom bracket that you screw into it.

Yes, that is what I'm trying to get across.

Cranksets are more specific as to the BB type they will work with. BB shells will work with many different BB types. So the crankset you pick will dictate your choice of BB's to go into that shell. If you were to pick a BB first, you might not be able to get a Shimano crankset you like.

I may have just added confusion to the thread though. Your OP is asking about cranksets. My injection of pick the crank then worry about the BB was not needed.

Toward that, I'll just say that I'm happy with Shimano, and though I think they are ugly, the new Hollowtech II with the new style four armed spider has some advantages. The prime being that you can change the rings without having to separate the crankarms. I have one of the new Shimano 105 5800 cranks on my '91 Paramount. It was easy to install and works great from the get go.
