I am rather worried about the long dowel. It may be used to wack roadies wearing kit.

He was right-hooked but being brilliant and a great rider he rode out of it. "A lot of cyclists" wouldn't have been able to save it.

I don't see what difference it makes what side a QR lever is on, but I always like it tucked behind the fork leg so that nothing can grab it I might run into and pull it open, that is an old cyclocross/MTB trick.

That is a leather belt with a hand-tooled leather turtle buckle, and the rod is just a fiberglass marker to stick in the ground to mark driveways etc. when the snow is deep.

Like having a backwards seat post, no bar tape and the small chainring on the outside, it makes no difference at all.

None of the things we’re scoffing at here make that much of a difference. That’s why it’s so fun!

I see this thread is still active.

Has the chainring setup ever been revealed? Why is the small right on the outside and how does beng1 shift between rings without a derailleur...or shifter? Is it really dismount, loosen the rear wheel, move the chain to the other ring, pull the rear wheel back for tension, tighten the rear wheel, and then get back on the goose bike to ride?

This was clarified elsewhere, and it actually makes sense. This bike is just a single-speed, and the larger chainring is on the inside because it provides a better chain line for the single cog. Without having short chainring bolts or individual spacers available, the smaller chainring was placed in the outboard position to act as a spacer for the bolts. It looks highly unconventional, but it's really just a use-what-you've-got solution.

I'm pretty sure the small chainring on the outside is just to take up the slack on the chainring bolts running a 1x with a 2x crankset (and I'm assuming the inside position has the ideal chainline for this specific application). So that is actually functional. I know there are spacers for that, and 1x specific bolts, but a home mechanic is more likely to have an old worn out chainring sitting around than specialty bolts or spacers.

I think shorter chain ring bolts would be better, because those teeth look ready to gouge a calf when the foot slips off the pedal.

You're forgetting about beng's superior cycling skills. Also, sometimes it takes a while to find the dumpster with short chainring bolts.
