Have you serviced your Sachs Aris freewheel? They are notorious for becoming very gummy due to the original grease which ages into a sticky "peanut butter" consistency. Sachs also tended to flood the entire interior with grease (instead of just greasing the races), causing the pawls to not function correctly.


Above is one I serviced earlier this month which is not as bad as some I've worked on. Because the red plastic bearing cages also serve as seals, there is no cutting corners and using the "Flush & Dribble" method to service.

However, I would never expect styggno1 to improperly service, what IMO, is the best 7 speed freewheel ever made.

We share Aris as our favourite freewheel. They are really good. I agree on them needing a different grease than the original. For this build I just took off the cogs and cleaned them as the frewheel body got a service just a couple of years ago.

Bullet proof wheels built. 40 spoke Campagnolo Record high flange hubs, DT Competition spokes, Mavic T217 SUP rims and Spcialized 38mm Pathfinder Pro tires.

Finished them today. Looking forward to a test ride tomorrow!

Changed from a honey team pro with copper rails to a brown with chrome reails,




Contemplated changing the bar wrap to a new brown leather but this leather has been there since I built the bike and has earned its right to stay as long as it is in OK shape. I know the cables are long - but that was how it was recommended back then for touring - "to have some extra length in case".



And then I took it for a spin.




It is a wonderful bike.

I am pleased with how the Blackburn racks has performed thru many years of use. They do come with a life time warranty but when a NOS set of front lowriders came up for auction locally - and sold at the equivalent of about 20 USD - I could not resist.

I guess I now have racks enough for two lifes...!
