Tern D7i Gears Skipping on Load
Hello,
I got an almost pristine Tern Link D7i from someone recently and all would be great, but when I got to test ride it a bit more, it skips gears when applying load. It has Shimano Nexus internal 7 speed gear hub.
I tried to do alignment with yellow stripes and 4th gear, but even when aligned they keep slipping and skipping when I pedal, making it nearly impossible to ride. I also noticed it is really hard to switch to 7th gear and the higher I switch the harder it becomes.
To add to it all, 2nd gear makes some rattling noises when pedaling and slipping/skipping as well of course.
Do you think something can be done with it or that Nexus hub is a lemon and I need to order a new one? It's barely used and I find it odd such issues appeared.
I tried to take off that wheel as well, checked pedals/chain, put everything back and issue is still there as it is. I want to go to a LBS, but I'm not even sure if they look at internal hub issues.

You're supposed to ease off the pedals when changing gears, or even stop pedalling.
Since it's barely used, there's no reason to suspect the cable + housing needs changing.
When adjusting the yellow stripes, go → 3 → 4 → 5 → 4 and check that they still line up.
You migh also take the wheel off the bike, and make sure the left hand-side cone isn't too tight, preventing the bearing balls from doing their job correctly: The wheel should spin with no/very little lateral play.

Yep, tried adjusting yellow stripes like that, no result. Took wheel off and on as well, still the same. Just to clarify - it does slip when I pedal, not when I shift gears.
It feels like cogs in hub just don't hold the load or something.

The Nexus-7 is easy to open up and inspect. For some reason I'm having trouble finding a video, but the internals come out as a unit from the drive-side by removing the locknut and cone from the *non-drive* side. If you find metal bits, the hub needs serious help. You could send the hub HERE.
