SPDs unclipping
I seem to be unclipping, while skidding more often than usual lately.
not sure if it's because its winter. or if my cleats are done.
gives me a mini heart attack every time.
happened twice in a row on my commute today.
i'm using SPDs. Pedals look fine. maximum tension.
from the picture, does it look like i need new cleats?
someone on kijiji is selling a pair of time atacs for 20bucks. thinking of switching.
atacs seem to be the preferred pedal for fixed?
thx.

What cleats are you using?
SH-51 single release cleats are more secure than SH-56 multi release. Make sure you are using SH-51.

Shimano SPDs are generally quite good.
But being self-clearing of snow and mud isn’t part of their fame.
And it doesn’t take much residue to mess with engagement and retention.
Time use the same basic design as Eggbeaters, which OTOH are known for their self-clearing ability.

Have you adjusted the tension on the pedals? I'd give the spring a couple extra turns.
I try to set the tension to the point where it is almost difficult to get them engaged, although with fixed, you'll probably want to back it off slightly.
I like the tension adjustment on the Wellgo pedals better than Shimano.
It may be time to get some new pedals and cleats. Your cleats look pretty banged up.

But skidding your bike is way more fun than crapping your pants!

Oil your pedals while you are at it. The new cleats won't release as well as the old. If your pedal mechanisms are getting dry, you might not come out at all.

That doesn't look worn enough to cause issues, since it's the top side that engages the pedal. I typically replace mine when the front part wears down enough to create a sharp edge.
But then, I don't skid, either.
