Valve Core Remover

Aside from using a sealant, any other reason to keep a Valve Core Remover in a repair kit?

You might become a hero if on the road you find someone that can't get air to stay in their tube because the valve core is loose. I won't ever be that hero though. I don't carry one.

I used to have a valve stem cap that was also a core remover. Forgot to remove it from the bike I sold.

Look closely at some of the better multi-tools, and they often have valve core removers -- sometimes a spoke wrench does double-duty. So if you are carrying such a multi-tool, you've got it covered.

Otherwise you get a tiny plastic valve core tool with multi-packs of valve cores, which you will end up purchasing if you run tubeless. Those little plastic tools weigh nothing and can be added to a patch kit, taped to a tire lever, whatever.

How much can one of those valve core remover tools weigh? Here's a reply to the Park one on Amazon:

"Thank You for your interest. Product Dimensions: 7 x 4 x 1 inches ; 0.8 ounces"

For Presta users

Flat Plastic valve core tool weighs 0.6 grams .
A US penny weighs about 2.5grams.

Some pumps have a extension tube that screws on to a Presta valve.
Upon unscrewing the extension they can loosen the core.

One of those silly flat plastic core tools can save the day.
Plus, it's like having alcohol or cookies when backpacking... you can trade it for whatever you'd like!

I have bikes with Presta valved tubes, as well as some with Schrader valved tubes. On the ones with Schrader valves, I most often have one of the valves capped with the type that can be used to remove the valve core. Some are plastic and some are metal but the plastic ones are a little less obvious .

If you screw your CO2 inflator to the Presta valve you can freeze the core to the inflator and then remove the core with the inflator. Whooooossssshhhh. Oops! :-\

tiny needle nose will tighten valve cores and may have other uses (removing thorns and similar.)
