Hello all, first post here. Please be gentle.

I'm looking to get into road riding, or should I say looking to get a road bike for my road riding, but I'm really a relative newbie to cycling in general.

Based on my reading in this thread and elsewhere, the consensus seems to be that this Caddy bike (the RLE1.8) would be a good deal at a couple or a few hundred dollars more, and at $600 it's a steal. Given that if it doesn't work out, I can return it to a Costco store, I'm thinking I'll get one, and take it to my LBS for fitting and adjustment.

My one concern, though, is how rude the awakening will be moving from my mountain bike with its low gearing to a roadie with a double? How much would the reduction in weight and rolling resistance help? I'm a reasonably fit guy, but on my mountain bike I do use the granny gear quite a bit on steeper hills. Assuming I really should get a triple, how much expense and hassle would it be to replace the crankset?

Also, it appears that the only frame size Costco has in stock at this point is the 58 cm; I'm 6'0" with a 85.5 cm inseam (just measured it myself) -- would that work? I know most would recommend that a newbie get professionally sized for his/her first road bike, but if this deal is so good, I'm thinking I should just jump at it and return it if it simply won't work for me.

58cm should work for you - it definitely won't be too small. You'll be so much faster on this than on your mtb you'll wonder what took you so long. Don't worry about the crankset until after you've ridden a little while. You may find you don't need it. Welcome to road biking and welcome to BF.

I just purchased it this afternoon. Costco has a very good refund policy, if not the best, so I'm not worry about any problem that I might have. Since I'm inexperience with bike mechanics, I'll probably have to pay $40 for my LBS to tune it up. This would be my second purchase of road bike after my first Giant OCR3, which I've lost a few months ago.

I'll write some reviews once I receive it, but then the sale would be end at that time. If there is a Costco close to your house go buy it because you can return it later. I've tried to return a software back to local Costco, they even refunded the shipping cost, Costco is the best, gotta love them.

Ugh, practically everything is bloody more expensive up here in Canada. *sigh*

Anyhow, $1000 CAD is the same price as the OCR2. However, the OCR2 has Tiagra components, IIRC. So this seems like a decent deal, despite the price disparity. The Caddy is probably closer in specs to the OCR1.

But as mentioned above, the Caddy logo is nasty. On a comical aside, a guy I know has D's on his bike .

Anyhow, I think I'm going to stick with the OCR1 purchase. But, I might bike over to the local Costco to give it a quick ride up and down the aisles .

Just arrived yesterday. I haven't assembled it yet, but looks good so far. I'm gonna box them tomorrow and will put them together in my country. I'll let you guys know the review after riding it there. I have 2 months and half to try.

It doesn't look at all like a Felt frame. However, the Ultegra and DA models have an interesting sweep in the rear triangle.

Not a bad deal, really.

I've read a very positive review on the RLE 1.8 online (can't remember where).

It seems like it is high quality.

On another note I just gave away a brand new GMC Denali made by Kent. This thing sells for $150 at Walmart. It has some very strange plastic mountain bike style shifters (Shimano Revo). It weighs a lot (30 lbs at least). People where fighting over this on Freecycle. Had to adjust the brakes (the pads had to be shaved to be level since they were thicker at one end then they were at the other and the pad would not make full contact with the rim). I did not have time to get new pads and I was giving it away (shaving them a bit worked out perfect).

It seems like GM has a deal with Kent to put their name on their bikes (I'm the master of the obvious).

Taking the costco bike to the LBS is not cool. Maybe the reason the bike shop bikes are more expensive is because you are paying for a certain level of care and service??

Why not cool? I'd bet the markup on service is much greater than the markup on an entry level bike. The LBS doesn't have to provide free sizing, free setup, free tune up for a year, or deal with warranty crap. Plus, there was no risk in ordering it and carrying the inventory.

Many small businesses thrive because of their service departments. I DON'T know about the bike shop, but I do know that in the fireplace shop I used to work in, servicing other peoples stuff was the best money maker we had.

That's right. I'm told the profits shops get from bikes isn't what keeps them going. It's the service that goes along with the bikes sold, or the repairs, you get the picture.

Too bad it looks like they only have it available in 58cm!!! I would guess that is why the price dropped so much!!
