First Tri Done, with no hat!

Hey Everyone,

I just completed my first triathlon, at the sprint distance. www.firsttri.com

Thanks for the hat tips. Since it was overcast/rainy, I went hatless and had a great time.

One thing i figured out too late was why the swim times seemed a bit slow for last year's event.
Turns out for this race, you come out of the water, then walk/run about a quarter mile to get back to the transition area. I included walk in that part because getting back to the transition area involved mud on the sidewalks, wet steps, and an incredibly steep hill to do in bare feet. I had no intention of slipping and getting hurt that early in the race, so I took it easy, and resumed race pace intensity on the bike.

Note to self: Drop sandals by the swim exit next time.

Congrats on your first race. Had a race similar to that with a really long run to transition that involved a pretty big grass hill. Saw a few people stash some shoes out of the swim. Generally that's not allowed if the officials see it and are sticklers, they can penalize you for it.

Hope you have as much fun at the next one. And the next one, and the next one, and....

Wow, didn't think about that. I guess enforcement was a little lax, especially with so many people ipodding on the run.

Next up: Beach Bum Tri in Hilton Head, SC.
Swim 500 yards in the surf, then bike 6 miles on the beach, then run 3 miles on the beach.

Ipods? Yuck. I love my music, but I end up going too fast to start to keep pace with the music, or something. I don't know it's annoying.

I can barely get my shoes on properly. If I tried to take my iPod I'd probably strangle myself!

Anyway, congrats! A tri-virgin no more!

Yeah, I tried using the old pod on some track workouts early in the season...

Guns-N-Roses "You could be mine" let me know that Axel's speed and mine don't really match for a decent run pace.

Depending on which race/conditions, sometimes everyone.

I agree with rplong. It depends on race conditions. Sometimes you see everyone putting them on while running out of T2.

I don't think I've ever done a tri hatless. I have a white cotton RiverCats hat that's become my Race Hat. Brim forward into the sun, brim backwards away. Just makes things that much more comfortable. And it's a refresher to dump a cup of cold water into it at the aid stations. Just make sure you don't get mixed up: that Accelerade makes your hair sticky.

I prefer a hat because it keeps the sweat out of my eyes. So I'll wear one regardless of the clouds/sun conditions.

Sun? What is this thing of which you speak? Brim forward into the rain, brim sideways to stop the sleet from building up in your ear...

Funny. I lived over there for a while and I looked forward to my flights from Stanstead to Liverpool because the plane would get above the clouds for a few minutes and you could remember that the sun really existed.
