Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Or a milk tanker truck. I often feel the breeze from those guys.

Vapor barrier. Keeps the insulation in the real gloves dry. It is actual outdoor medicine doctrine for the feet in cold conditions and I'm here to tell you it works, but I had a huge argument here once with people who thought that sweaty feet could not be warm feet and that bacterial overgrowth and damp would cause instant gangrene, so I won't suggest it.

Up there, yeah.

Based on previous close calls, I used to think if would be a nice 76 yo granny in a white Lexus or Merc sedan who actually didn't register my presence. After the hit and run, I'm seeing a younger and more sociopathic "Karen" type, texting or yacking in a white Lexus or Merc SUV, and perhaps late for a kid-related thing.

A parked car once pulled out in front of me and caused me to fall. There was a Thule bike rack on the roof. I gave the driver and his passenger a good talking to. Three or four years ago, on an otherwise quiet road, I got buzzed by a guy with a MTB on his roof.

I still feel bad about a rude pass I made on a road cyclist one day.

I think I even had my MTB in the back of my truck.

I just put a pair of purple nitrile gloves in my jacket for tomorrow's ride. Will give it a try. I wish we still had latex but we have gone latex-free due to concerns about allergies. Sad!

What's the preferential difference between latex and nitrile?

I only have experience with the latter.

Probably my strongest moment of restraint occurred on the penultimate day of a week-long tour across PA. Long day. I was maybe 4 miles from my state park campground when I got buzzed extremely closely by an older model, yellow Volvo wagon with NJ plates, in violation of PA's 4' passing law. Don't know how they managed not to hit me. After it passed, I saw a bunch of stuff in the back covered by a red and black plaid blanket. I was livid and even tried to sprint after it. Make it to the campground, do whatever I did and then started walking to the bath house. Low and behold, about four sites from mine, I see an older model, yellow, Volvo wagon with NJ plates and a red and black plaid blanket in the back. It was like the scene in "Pulp Fiction" where Marcellus Wallace sees Butch stopped at a red light. I stopped and stared at the couple for a minute, but they were totally clueless as to who I was. A large part of me wanted to call the park police or at least confront them, but I was spent and I figured it might cause more trouble than it was worth. I still had to get clean and cook dinner. I don't think I had even set up my tent yet.

I know for a fact that the pass I made was legal. Illinois has a 3' law and I was nowhere close to that. From what I remember there was a car oncoming and instead of slowing down behind the cyclist, waiting for oncoming traffic to pass, and then passing them giving the largest amount of space possible, I sped up and split the yellow line with my truck. It wasn't particularly risky or unsafe for either of us, but it was definitely inconsiderate. I really felt like an jerk afterwards.

Maybe I am old fashioned, and I have not tried this blinded, but I believe that latex stretches better and has a better feel when doing examinations.

This talk about the qualities of nitrile vs latex made me wonder if there was such a thing as nitrile condoms. A quick search reveals female nitrile condoms, but I'm not seeing much for conventional male condoms.

Well, we all know that serious cyclists use latex tubes instead of butyl.

Do only serious doctors lament the change to nitrile?

That reminds me of a neurologist in Chester PA, whom I once helped the AG send to jail. Good story, but better told offline.

If it's itching, it might not be the condoms.

Bike content: my Cervelo stem should be arriving shortly.

I really hope that the thing has M5 bolts for the faceplate - I bought an out-front combo mount (Wahoo & camera/light) and I was so disappointed that it didn't fit the temporary stem that I passed on the opportunity for an outdoor test ride last week.

I have some jewelry arriving for my Trek today.

I'll post pictures once I get home from work, but I'll just say these will be the nicest bike components I've ever purchased.

Busy morning. Likely not Saturday.
The combi I was riding into Merida yesterday had a driver who was texting during the entire trip. Where will it all end?
Many families here have only a motorcycle for transportation. The passenger is alnost always texting. And frankly I see many more motorcycle drivers texting, than cars. Almost all if them. Sometimes even bicycle moms with a child on the back. Sad!

Just for fun (idle hands) I went to the Canyon site to see their road bike offerings. Looks great!

They have a "Find your Size" feature, I entered my height and inseam....and got the following:

Your body height/inseam length ratio is outside the normal range – check your measurements are accurate and entered properly into the form.
When measuring your inseam, you should pull up the spirit level or book into your crotch with the same amount of pressure as if you were sitting on the saddle.

Sad!!
