Deore M6000 Rear Deraileur and Altus
Hi, I have a 9x2 mountain bike with a cassette of 11-36T. I have a rear derailleur of Shimano Acera and Altus shifters. I just got a rear deraileur of Deore M6000 SGS. I want to know if I can install it on my bike, will it be OK with the Altus shifter or I must have the Deore shifter for compatibility?

It's a Dyna-Sys derailleur and your system is SIS, you need to change the right shifter and 10 speed cassette (since there are no 9 speed Dyna-Sys shifters).

You might be able to use it on your existing cassette with a SRAM 1:1 9-speed shifter, but they're only roughly compatible by coincidence not design, so no guarantee.

So for the rear derailleur to work, I need to use a shifter of M6000 itself? If I do that, will it work with a chain of 9s and the cassette?

The derailleur is just a complicated lever, anything that pulls cable will make it work. The indexing is done by the shifter. The M6000 derailleur has much less leverage than your 9-speed one. So your original shifter won't even be close, you need one that pulls a lot more cable. The M6000 shifter makes it line up with the cogs of a 10 speed cassette which are closer together than 9 speed. That might sort-of work for you, but probably not too well. It might work better with a SRAM X5 or X7 9-speed shifter.

The real question is, What problem were you trying to solve "getting" the M6000 RD?
