I am partial to Italian road bikes. l have not found an Italian mountain bike in my size (XL) yet. I did find a Cinelli 'The Next Machine' and Bianchi Grizzly for my wife though.

Those two are sort of my grail mountain bikes...Basso and Rossin. I won't be able to afford either unless it is a steal of a deal...

OMG! I'm glad I'm literally thousands of miles away from this, as I might get stupid and use money earmarked for other things. Looks to be my size, a favorite color, etc, etc.
I'll have to bide my time in the pauper section for now.

Schwinn Paramount - $129 (Ghent)

Posted 2020-01-27 21:23

"1991 Schwinn Paramount.

Bent wheels needs trued/replaced, rear wheel makes it not currently rideable. Otherwise great bike that can really move. All gears work smooth and as they should. Tubes and tires were replaced in fall by East Coast Bicycles.

My main commuter for the last year and it’s been great, but I’m looking to change it up and try commuting with a 29” BMX.

bicycle frame material: steel

bicycle type: road
condition: good
frame size: Large
make / manufacturer: Scwhinn
model name / number: Paramount OS
suspension: none (rigid)
wheel size: 29 in"

Wow. Both are incredible bikes, and I'd be proud to own one. But I think they may be 2nd generation - the unicrown forks give that away. That Olmo has eluded me - seller sold it in Denver. If I had bought it, I would have made it my dedicated offroad bike. The only thing I would have done to it would have been to add new tires. So the search continues. No worries, though. I still have many projects to complete this winter. I made significant progress on the Dawes Ranger tonight. This bike is gonna be SO COOL!

I lucked out on the Cinelli bike for my wife. It was literally dirt cheap. I will never find a deal like that on an Italian bike for myself. The Basso and Rossin are beauties.

I'd made an inquiry about that product around reply no. 53 over here.

I haven't used it yet, but I'm definitely tempted, and the presence of a storefront of some sort here in ATL makes it a tempting proposition.

Barn (or maybe shed) find of sorts. Nothing real special, and would be a blank-ton of work, but a make/model of which you see very few survivors.

Hey, since you posted it, maybe you'd want to share what you know about the framebuilder? Coming from the outside and trying to figure out what all these independent builders did and what makes their builds special is counterproductive to appreciating their innovations (if any). I've learned plenty watching this forum, but there has been at least one instance (John Stinsman, and Veloce) where a smaller independent builder has only a handful of information on them and their product shared on the forums, and on the internet. We're going to have to share the knowledge about these builders before it's gone.

Very decent looking 58cm white '71 Gitane TdF on eBay with a non-crazy BIN ($385) and decent shipping ($94):

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-Gitane...n/303463843052

Wheels have been rebuilt as these are clinchers but otherwise is fairly original:

SuperCorsa, not TdF

This looks like the one someone bought of CL for $90 and had listed up a few days later for way more. It was posted a hundred or two back in this thread, if I recall.

Ended up on eBay for 5x+ as much a couple days later: https://www.bikeforums.net/21206434-post52774.html

Well if the S bought it for $50, he/she got a good deal. The bike on eBay in any case has a non-crazy BIN price.

Why a super corsa and not a TdF? The sticker on the fork looks like the TdF sticker. My TdF has that sticker on one side of the fork and a Reynolds sticker on the other side. Plus doesn't the super corsa have campy drop outs? The eBay bike has simplex.

Basically? Checkered flag sticker on top tube. TdF doesn't have it. Assuming it's original, that sticker has the S/C designation on it. Decent shot of it: https://thecabe.com/forum/attachment...er-jpg.557134/

No.

TdF and SC are indistinguishable at the frame level and basically have whatever dropouts and fork ends Gitane could get their hands on while Peugeot and Motobecane were eating up all the inventory during the early 70s. For example, my TdF has Simplex rear, Campy front and came with a Sugino Mighty Comp crank. My other one has Campy front and back and came with a Stronglight crank.

The design is called "elevated stay", or "e-stay". It was popular in the early 90s but faded within a couple of year. The purpose of the "e-stay" design was to get the chainstays out of the tight space between the chainrings and tire, which allows wider tires, lower Q-factor for the cranks, and more mud-clearance in the bottom bracket area. The bottom bracket (or rather, lower seattube) is more flexible in this configuration as it is only triangulated in the front triangle instead of both the front and rear triangles as in a traditional design, which was a downside.

While the design didn't last very long, it is now coming back on gravel bikes, but instead of elevating the chainstays, the driveside chainstay or both stays are "dropped" to allow the benefits listed above without removing the chainstay-to-BB interface that keeps that area stiff. This is the OPEN U.P.P.E.R. that is a popular, high-end carbon gravel bike designed by Gerard Vroomen of Cervelo fame, adapting the e-stay idea.

Interesting, with the drop outs I was going with the catalog description but I know that is often off when it comes to boom era bikes.

My TdF (or at least I think it's a TdF ) has a TdF sticker on the fork and the checkered flag with the SC designation on the top tube like the subject bike (and simplex drop outs)
