sgtrobo, if you take a look at the gravel ride pic thread in that subforum, I think many gravel bike users seem to shun pavement rather than link together long stretches of pavement... I know I intentionally work to avoid pavement on my rides. The backroads are just far more pleasant.

what I notice first is that only 6 out of the 31 people i can see commuting have helmets.
less than 20% is unfortunate.
it isnt about if you are a safe rider, it's about everyone else around you- cars, bikes, and walkers.
ride a bike? Wear a helmet.
ride a horse? Wear a helmet.
ride a motorcycle? Wear a helmet.
there just isn't a downside to wearing one.
pretty simple. Hope it eventually takes hold over there.
less than 20% is unfortunate.

Helmet hair exists, it's irrefutable.
I wear a helmet when bike riding.

I hope we get safe infrastructure in the US so the we ride without helmets.
But this isn't a helmet thread, is it?

Well, this thread has turned religious, so it will be moved or closed soon. Those helmet missionaries eventually show up at your door no matter how remote your location. Often riding hybrids.

Gravel and adventure bikes are hybrid bikes good for a variety of surfaces, and yet are not generally derided like hybrid bikes traditionally have been. Why the difference? Is it down to focus? Does focusing on gravel roads and/or gravel racing provide an optimization target that is lacking with traditional hybrid designs?
I think all bikes are good for a variety of surfaces. as long as you can fit the tires.
hybrid bikes are usually crap alu bikes with thin 700c wheel/tires and a non sloping top tube, but the rest is mtb gear, like the handlebars. this is the s****iest type of hybrid i can come up with to be honest.
I build real hybrids for myself. like a 26er mtb with rigid fork and drop bar and discs and slicks. thats real hybrid imo.
gravel roads/racing has nothing to do with it. the regular "hybrids" are flawed by design and all people that rides bikes a lot see this.
gravel bikes are just road bikes with discs and sloping top tubes, that takes 50mm tires
or 29er mtbs with drop bars and rigid forks.
or monster cross 29ers with sloping top tubes.
or cross bikes with discs and more tire clearance.
i have 2 cross bikes with discs, and they both take 40mm tires. I guess I'm a "graveler" too. although none of my bikes have off road tires. i run slicks.
I also have a 26er mtb with rigid fork, discs, and drop bar. this is a real hybrid.

hope it worked so that Stuart doesnt feel compelled to again rant about how mtbs are what we should all use for gravel and why every state's gravel is pathetic compared to what he calls gravel.
